Veteran Resource Fair Sept. 29

IowaWORKS and Adair County Veterans Affairs presents a Community Resource Fair for veterans 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 29 at the 4-H/FFA Building on the Adair County Fairgrounds, 900 NE Elm St., Greenfield.

This is a free event to connect veterans, service members and their spouses with resources, support systems, organizations and community members.

Flu vaccines available in Greenfield

The annual flu vaccination is recommended for everyone ages 6 months and older, officials with Adair County Health System (ACHS) said recently. It is recommended to get the influenza vaccine early fall before the flu season begins circulating in the community.

Ideally, everyone should be vaccinated by the end of October. However, if you are unable to be vaccinated until November or later, it is still highly recommended you do so as the season generally peaks in February and can last until May.

This year, the CDC’s advisory board has designated preferential vaccination for the high dose vaccine (Fluzone High Dose, or Fluad) for those ages 65 years and older because these vaccines have a higher antigen count and can assist older individuals in developing a better immune response.

Adair County Public Health has been administering high dose vaccine for those over age 65 for many years. However, this is the first year it has received an official preferred recommendation from CDC.

The composition of flu vaccines this season has also been updated based on previous circulating strains. The vaccines will protect against two strains of Influenza A (Victoria/H1N1 and Darwin) and two strains of Influenza B (Austria and Phuket).

While influenza vaccine may not cover all strains of influenza virus or prevent individuals from getting influenza 100%, it can greatly reduce more severe symptoms of illness, hospitalization and death. ACHS will be administering all quadrivalent vaccine, which is preservative free, that cover these strains.

You can receive the flu vaccine and COVID vaccine at the same time. Adair County Public Health will be offering flu vaccine this October along with COVID Bivalent boosters. Please call ahead for walk-in clinic times or for an appointment to ensure vaccine and staff are available.

Nucara Pharmacy in Greenfield will also be offering flu and COVID bivalent boosters this season.  • High dose flu clinics for those ages 65+ are scheduled 9 a.m. to noon Oct. 5 and Oct. 7.

• Walk in flu clinics will run 1 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Wednesdays starting Oct. 12 through Nov. 16.

Arbor Season Oct. 8 at Warren Cultural Center

Arbour Season, husband and wife duo, will express their passion for life through music at the Warren Cultural Center in Greenfield, 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 8.
