Orient Library Garden Fair

Mark Your Calendars! The annual Garden Fair and Plant Sale supporting the Orient Community Library, formerly known as the Public Resource and Technology Center, is set for 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 14 and Sunday, May 15. This fundraiser will be held at the same location as previous years, 118 Jackson Street, Orient. The second day, May 15, will be the Plant Sale only.

The Garden Fair will have several vendors selling homemade or handcrafted items such as hand-loomed rugs, wooden furniture, cutting boards, goat soaps and lotions, wooden bowls, garden art, wildlife photography and birdhouses. There will be an excellent assortment of perennials from local gardens, annuals for a colorful garden and several varieties of tomatoes and peppers and ornamental grasses. The Library Board will be providing coffee and cinnamon rolls (until gone) to start the day. Also, lunch will be available 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the premises.

Customer parking is north of the Garden Fair, not on the street. Handicap drop off only in driveway.

Remember the vendors and food truck are only there on Saturday, May 14.

Something for everyone on May 14 and 15 at the Garden Fair and Plant Sale. Food, vendors, annuals, vegetables and perennials all at the same location. Plan to join us and thank you for supporting this fundraiser for the public library in Orient.

Check the Public Resource Technology Center Facebook page for more particulars as they develop.

This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Library. All proceeds go to the Orient Community Library.

Author to visit Orient library

The Orient Community Library will be hosting Iowa author Linda McCann 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 19. McCann is an author of non-fiction Iowa history; including Prisoners of War in Iowa; Prohibition in Iowa; several books about the Civilian Conservation Corps in different areas of Iowa; and The Vanished Towns of the Cedar Valley series.

Linda will be presenting a program on her Prisoners of War in Iowa book. Iowa had about 25,000 German, Italian and Japanese prisoners of war during World War II. There were two main camps, Algona and Clarinda, and 19 branch camps where prisoners worked for short periods of time. The POWs worked in fields harvesting crops, in canning factories, corn seed dealers, helping to supply the needs of the people at home. McCann was able to speak with Iowans who worked or knew the POWs and shares their memories.

No cost to attend. Light refreshments will be served. Copies of McCann’s books will be available for purchase. Come join us and learn about a part of our state’s history that you may not know even existed.

The Orient Community Library is located on the east side of the Orient-Macksburg Elementary Building. Look for the “Library” sign.
