Filing period for June primary election started Monday

The candidate filing period for the June 7, 2022 primary election started Monday, March 7 and goes through 5 p.m. Friday, March 25.

County offices on the November ballot will include Supervisor District 2NE, Supervisor District 4SE, Treasurer Brenda Wallace, Recorder Janelle Schneider and Attorney Melissa S. Larson.

The number of signatures required on a nomination petition to be placed on the ballot vary depending on party and open position. For the two supervisor districts, Democratic candidates need five signatures while Republican candidates need 12. For the other open offices, Democratic candidates need 24 signatures while Republican candidates need 59.

Petition packets are available from the Adair County Auditor’s Office or may be found online on the Iowa Secretary of State website. Petitions must be signed by valid, registered voters.

Completed petitions must be returned to the auditor’s office. The office will be open until 5 p.m. the day the period closes. Candidates must at least be 18 by election day, Nov. 8. Candidates can not be a convicted felon unless voting rights have been legally restored.

A person who runs for any of the offices, but does not live in the county and wins the Nov. 8 election, must be a registered voter and valid Adair County resident by Jan. 1, 2023, when the term begins. All of the terms for the positions are four years.

All of the polling locations for the June primary will remain the same, however the redistricting and reprecincting processes may mean some residents will go to a different location to vote than before. Questions regarding polling locations may be addressed by calling the auditor’s office at 641-743-2546.

Adair County has been in Senate District 10, represented by Adel Republican Jake Chapman, but now it will be a part of Senate District 12, which includes all of Adair, Madison, Clarke, Lucas, Decatur and Wayne counties, and portions of Dallas, Union and Madison counties.

Adair County has been in House District 20, represented by Greenfield Republican Ray Sorensen, but now it will be a part of House District 23, which includes Adair and Madison counties in their entirety, and portions of Union, Clarke and Dallas counties.
