Firefighters battle residential structure fire just before midnight Saturday

GREENFIELD — Greenfield firefighters received mutual aid from Fontanelle firefighters in battling a house fire just before midnight Friday night.

According to Greenfield Fire Chief Josh Oder, the call came in just before midnight. The home was located in the 500 block of SW Mills Street.

“We were unsure if it was occupied. We responded with multiple units,” Oder said. “First on scene noticed heavy smoke and fire coming from the garage and second floor.”

Oder said that it’s fortunate that nobody was in the residence because the house was “fully involved” within 20 minutes.

The fire department is unsure of the cause at this time but has reason to believe the source could have been electrical in nature.

Oder said the fire was out by 6 a.m. and there were no injuries.

Greenfield and Fontanelle firefighters received help on scene from Alliant Energy, Greenfield Municipal Utilities, Greenfield Police, the Adair County Sheriff’s Office and Adair County Ambulance.

Editor’s Note: This report will be updated if and when more information is available about how to help the family.
