Veterans Day events

Hy-Vee free breakfast pickup

Creston’s Hy-Vee store will commemorate Veterans Day Nov. 11 by offering a free breakfast to all veterans and active-duty military members. Due to COVID-19 safety precautions, each breakfast will be individually packaged and available via contactless drive-thru in the store parking lot (west side, by the tent and grill) from 6 to 10 a.m. Nov. 11, at the Creston Hy-Vee located at 600 Sheldon St. In addition to the free breakfast, veterans will also receive 10% off their grocery total when they shop at Hy-Vee Nov. 11.

Pork loin giveaway

All veterans in Union County are invited to come to the Creston Water Works office, behind the Union County Freedom Rock in Creston 7:30 to 8:30 a.m Nov. 11 for a free pork loin roast and recipe booklet from Iowa Select Farms to celebrate Veteran’s Day 2020.

At this drive-through event, Iowa Select Farms volunteers will wear masks and gloves to pass a pork loin through the vehicle window. Those not feeling well are asked to stay home.

Veteran wall unveiling

There will be a ribbon cutting for Union County Veteran’s Wall 11 a.m. Nov. 11 at the VFW Ballfield at the intersection of West Page and South Oak streets. Joe Anson, Denny Abel, and Gary O’Daniels will have some words of thanks to people in the community. Six quilts of valor will be presented. All veterans and families plus the community are welcomed to join.

Creston Community High School virtual program

The CCSD will host a virtual Veterans Day program, which will be live streamed all day at ksibradio.com PantherTV. Local veterans will be honored. Brad A. Kasal, Sgt. Maj. Basic Academy Marine Corps JROTC will speak.

Saint Malachy Catholic School virtual program

Each class of Saint Malachy students will present readings, songs or tributes to veterans. The program will be available virtually on the Holy Spirit Catholic Church Facebook page and the Saint Malachy Facebook page.

East Union Community virtual program

Michael Hudson, East Union graduate and veteran, will be featured in a video with a voice-over introduction by student council members. The video will be shared in the classrooms, on the school website eastunionschools.org and the school social media pages.
