Richard Dale “Dick” Johnson, a longtime resident of Edwardsville, Kansas, passed away suddenly Sunday, July 5, 2020, at the age of 78.

Richard was born in Vallejo, California, Oct. 16, 1941 to Dudley James and Norma Jane (Porter) Johnson, the first of six children. The family returned to Iowa in the late 1940s where Richard attended Carl No. 7 Country School and Cromwell schools. Richard graduated from high school in Afton in 1959. During that time he was fostered by Frank and Doris Landreth and he remained close to them for his entire life.

Richard married Alice Beller and this union was blessed with three children: twin daughters, who died at birth and another daughter, Rhonda. The couple later divorced. Richard later married Bonnie June Asbell and remained committed to her until her death.

Richard was successful in whatever he chose to do. He started as a mechanic and eventually owned a shop that specialized in Volkswagen repairs. He also built and drove race cars, did long and short-haul trucking, invested in real estate and was a kind and fair landlord, a good neighbor and a loyal friend. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, his maternal grandparents Loda (Jack) and Myrtle (Molln) Porter, his paternal grandparents Albert (Bert) and Hazel (Ray) Johnson, his foster parents Frank and Doris Landreth, his wives, Alice Beller and Bonnie June Asbell-Johnson, his infant twin daughters, nephew Wade Geary and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Rhonda Dehner (Hooks), her husband, Ronnie Hooks, grandsons Michael and David Dehner, uncle Wayne Johnson, aunts Judy Johnson, Leta Larkin and Doris K. Porter, brother David Johnson (friend Angie Wortman), sisters: Susan Knighton, Nancy (Roy) Lumbard, Laura (Eldon) Molln and Julie (Jon) Brooks, nieces and nephews Sahrina Geary, Star Knighton, Toby (Erin) Knighton, Roger Rink, Bill (Monique) Rink, Rebecca Ward (friend Greg Pearce), Robin Rink Matherly, Buddy Bump and a host of other friends and relatives.
