Fall Harvest is just about ready to start.
I see lots of combines parked next to fields that should be ready to harvest shortly. The crops around this area look to be in good shape. Both the corn and soybeans had some good rains on them late this summer. The derecheo missed most of the crops down this way compared to the central part of the state. Farmers, start your engines! The race will be on to see who finishes first on getting their crops in.
Property tax
You have six days before your first half property taxes are due. Next Monday, Sept. 30, the friendly staff at your local court houses will be glad to take your money. If you want you can also pay the second half of your taxes. It would save you trip next March.
Census
If you have not filled out a census form as of yet, please fill it out and send it in or go to 2020Census.gov and fill one out. The form is vital for our local cities and counties to recieve money from the government. The count is important to get future grants and money for all kinds of public projects.
Bull riders
I wanted to see how the pod seating in Wells Fargo was going to work last Saturday for the PBR Professional Bull Riders event. I have a feeling that this is how concerts are going to look for about the next year. The event only had about 1,500 people by my guess. So, it gave me an idea of how things would work going forward. The event was televised on CBSN and CBS. There were two sessions Saturday due to the fact the Pensacola, Florida, event got washed away by a hurricane. It was pretty interesting that in the first session, all the gates said Des Moines, Iowa, and in the second session the Des Moines part was covered up with Pensacola Florida stickers. Kind of the two cities in one theory. Des Moines kind of reminds me of Pensacola!?
Homecoming
Homecoming week for Creston Community High School starts this weekend. Not quite like the homecomings I remember as of late. I will miss the parade, but there will still be king and queen candidates and several of the other festivities during the week.
Football
The college schedule picks up some more games this week — working towards a full slate of games once the Big Ten gets going on Oct. 23. It looks like the Iowa/Nebraska game may reappear on the day after Thanksgiving. The NFL season is getting a little dicey! With no preseason games and shortened practice schedules before the year started, many players are getting hurt. Playing fantasy football this year has become a wavier wire nightmare for everyone. But at least there is football!
Tough to come by
There seem to be a lot of things that are tougher to come by. I just looked around at the local car dealers. I don't think I've ever seen their lots so depleted of cars and trucks. It is tough for them to get in any inventory, which starts the cycle of "if you don't have new cars to sell you don't get a trade in to sell." I understand that used car prices have also gone up about 40% over the last couple of months. At least I can buy eggs for less than $5 a dozen now. Finding a home is also tougher. It wasn't two years ago that they couldn't sell the condos where I live in less than two years. Now they are going in literally two days! Things, they are a changing.
Thought for the week: Waste no more time arguing about what a good person should be. BE one. — Marcus Aurelius
