GFWC/IOWA Bancroft History Assembly

GFWC/IOWA Bancroft History Assembly met Sept 21 at Creston Plaza Community Room with three life members and seven regular members present.

After the Pledge of Allegiance, members answered roll call as to the flower of their birthday month. Peg Anderson then gave a description of each flower.

Minutes were approved as written. The treasurer reported the budget will be ready for the November meeting.

The October meeting will be a Garden Party at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 5 at the Purple Cow and Kansas Street Deli in Afton. Anderson reported the Legislative Action Center is easy to navigate and important information can be found on this site. Sandy Oswald reviewed different activities that could be done each month.

The District Meeting will be held Oct. 16 in Oakland. Motion carried to take a plant to the convention. Sandy and Marisue Lewis will take care of purchasing the plant.

After the Club Collect, Lewis led us in reviewing the constitution and by-laws. A change was made and a final vote will be taken at the November regular meeting.

A 19th Amendment update was given by Anderson.

The next regular meeting will be Nov. 2 at the Creston Plaza Community Room.

Friends of the Library

The Friends of the Library Board met Sept. 21 in Crest Baptist’s Fellowship Hall. Those present were Peg Anderson, Jan Dillinger, Judy Hoakison, Jane King, Bunny Norton, Caprial Norton, Kay Raymond, Julie Schieffer, Mary Young and Aric Bishop.

The agenda and minutes were approved as written.

Tessa Hull addressed the board about having a story walk at Green Valley Park. The story walk would be one mile along the walking trail. The stories would be nature-inspired and diverse. The walks will encourage reading and health. The FOL board moved to fund the entire project.

Aric reported every Thursday from 5 to 6 p.m. is a Zoom meeting called “What Is On Your Nightstand.” This is a casual group who discuss what they are reading and perhaps find a new book to read from this discussion. Book lists resulting from this group are available at the library.

Sept. 25 is National Comic Book Day. Rick Friday will be talking about comic books and a “make-it-take-it” craft will be available. Call the library to reserve the craft project.

The Cemetery Walk will be 2 p.m. Sept. 27 at Calvary Cemetery. Rain place will be at Holy Spirit Parish. Those being honored are Thomas Walsh, Zelda Geis, Robert Spencer Jr., Ed and Rosalie Pesik, DC (Spive) Williams and Dorothy Peak.

Banned Book Week is Sept. 27 through Oct. 4. These are books that have been challenged or removed from libraries up to the year of 2019. There are some challenged books on display at the library. Libraries need to insure access to all books. There is always a book for it’s reader.

Friends of the Library Week is Oct. 18 through 24.

The last Tuesday of each month is an Adult Book Club on Zoom. The September book is “Where The Crawdads Sing.” The new book for October is “Send Down the Rain” by Charles Martin. You may reserve and pick up your book at the library.

The library has received a donation from FIVE which is much appreciated. Aric is always researching grants.

Julie and Bunny will attend the Lighted Christmas Parade meeting at 3:30 p.m. Sept. 24 at the Restored Depot.

Jane King and Mary Young will decide which treats to have during FOL Week for patrons. Jane King will make book labels to use in the pre-school books distributed during the week.

Ladies Lakeshore Auxiliary

The Ladies’ Lakeshore Auxiliary met for “cards and chatter” Sept. 23. The canasta winners were Linda Clark, first; Joan Chubick, second; Gwen Sandeman, third. The winner of the door prize was Joan Chubick. Their next meeting will be Sept. 30 and the hostess will be Joy Seeley.
