Area cross country roundup: Wolverines takes fourth at Panorama

Panorama Cross Country Invitational

PANORAMA – Nodaway Valley took sixth-place on the boys and girls side while Orient-Macksburg sent five runners to the Panorama Cross Country Invitational Thursday.

Nodaway Valley’s girls scored 191 points while Class 2A No. 7 Panorama took the top spot with 59 points.

Class 1A No. 17 Sophia Broers took 12th place with a 22:02. Lily Day took 32nd place (23:48), and Erin Ford ran a 23:58 for 35th place.

“All girls ran personal bests by one to two minutes on a very difficult course,” Nodaway Valley head coach Darrell Burmeister said.

Orient-Macksburg’s Christa Cass was the lone girl for the Bulldogs. She ran a 24:08 for 39th place.

The Class 1A No. 7 Nodaway Valley boys scored 191 points. Class 1A No. 1 Madrid took first place, scoring 60 points.

Class 1A No. 14 Toby Bower finished in 11th place, running a 17:57 while No. 16 Ben Breheny finished in 29th (18:46). Class 1A No. 26 Doug Berg finished in 16th place with an 18:09.

Orient-Macksburg’s Blake Thompson took the top spot for the Bulldogs’ boys. He ran a 20:34 for 71st place. Chance Kiddo (23:42), Chase Walker (23:59) and Izzy Pierce (24:35) finished close together, taking 139th, 140th and 142nd place.

Ballard Cross Country Invitational

HUXLEY – As one of three Class 1A schools invited, Nodaway Valley boys took a fourth-place team finish while the girls finished in seventh place Monday, Sept. 14 at the Ballard-Huxley Invitational.

The Wolverine boys scored 102 points on the day while Class 1A No. 1 Madrid and Class 3A No. 6 Solon tied for first place. The Wolverine girls scored 147 points, three points behind Nevada, while Solon took first place with 46 points.

Bower and Berg were top-10 finishers. Bower ran an 18:04 for seventh place while Berg’s 18:08 put him in ninth place. Breheny was the 12th place finisher, running an 18:15.

Broers finished in 12th place, running a 21:54. Erin Ford and Abby Engels took 26th and 34th place, finishing with times of 23:58 and 25:10, respectively.

Paul Fish Cross Country Invitational

RED OAK – Southwest Valley took home a fourth-place girls finish at the Tiger Cross Country Invite Monday, Sept. 14.

The girls tallied 92 points on the day. Shenandoah took home first place with 38 points.

Aubrey Boswell finished in 11th place, running a 26:40. Sydney Davies and Halle Pearson finished back-to-back at 24th and 25th. Davies ran a 28:12 while Pearson finished with a 28:14.

Southwest Valley’s two boys, Blake Venteicher and Ethan James, finished 39th and 46th place, respectively. Venteicher finished with a 25:11 while James ran a 29:17.

“Overall, it was a good night to run against some great competition,” Southwest Valley head coach Jason Hults said. “Red Oak is a tough course with lots of rolling hills. Our times were a little off from where we wanted to be after the first 2 meets, but the kids have great attitudes and will keep working hard as we prepare for our home meet on Thursday at Lake Icaria.”

Trojan Invite

PLEASANTVILLE – Mount Ayr grabbed a third-place girls team finish while East Union put a runner in the top five at Pleasantville’s Trojan Invite Monday, Sept. 14.

East Union’s Gabby Valencia continued her early-season success taking home fourth place after running a 21:37. Jillian Valencia was the next Eagle girl to place, finishing in 26th with a 24:03. Ansley Waigand squeaked her way into the top-50, placing 50th with a 27:38.

For the boys, East Union’s Jacob Driskill finished in 20th place as the top Eagle boy, running a 19:16. DJ Islas recorded 29th for the Eagles with a 19:48.

Mount Ayr girls finished in third place with 95 points behind Central Decatur’s 66-point second-place finish and PCM, who took home the crown, with 52 points.

Mount Ayr’s Karlie Larsen took the top spot for the girls group. She finished in seventh place behind a 21:57. Makayla Jones took home 13th with a 22:58 while Natalie Schaefer rounded out the top-three scorers, running a 23:03 for 15th place.

The Raider boys only had two runners Monday. Briar Knapp finished in 12th at 18:30 while Will Newton ran a 19:39 for 27th.
