Wifi Center opens in Afton

The doors of a a new WiFi Center opened its doors today on the northwest corner of the Afton square, in a building donated by the Afton VFW Post No. 8882.

“It’s just a building that people can go inside with their own devices and use free WiFi,” said Toni Landers, Afton city clerk. “They can go in, sit down, do whatever they need to do in a climate-controlled environment.”

Landers said the city-operated WiFi Center not only fills a gap in service for people who live in the country and experience a poor satelitte signal or WiFi connection, but it also provides a social service to individuals who may not be able to afford internet at home.

“We don’t have a library or somewhere like that people can go to get on to WiFi, so it kind of serves that purpose,” said Landers.

The WiFi Center is still in need of donations of additional furniture, such as tables and chairs, but it has enough currently to meet the needs of the public in its “trial phase.”

“Right now, with the COVID, we don’t want to put a lot of tables and chairs in there because we are limiting the amount of people that can go in, due to social-distancing,” said Landers.

Landers hopes the WiFi center helps meet the needs of residents in need of internet for their work or business.

“This is just another opportunity for people to go in and use it for school work, checking emails, play games or whatever they want to do,” said Landers.

The Afton WiFi Center is located at 290 N. Douglas St. and is open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.
