It’s that time of year here in Iowa where if you have a corn on the cob hankering, you will soon be able to satisfy that “want” with a fresh ear of Iowa corn on the cob. With any luck it should be on sale locally in the next few days. Nothing like a nice buttery ear of corn to make your barbecue a dinner to remember.
The produce seems to be doing pretty well this year. If my tomatoes are any indication, it should be a good crop. The hot days are making the red fruit grow at a good rate. So hit up your local farmers market or corn stand and get yourself a little piece of Iowa produce heaven!
If you haven’t paid your federal taxes yet this year, July 15 is the date you need to pinpoint. Due to all the C-19 craziness going on, the government has given people until next Wednesday to get your taxes paid for without penalty. Take advantage, if you haven’t sent them in yet.
Fourth of July
I was visiting my relatives in Crete, Nebraska, over the Fourth. When we drove back to my son’s house in Lincoln after the festivities that night, the air was so thick it looked like heavy fog, but it was really smoke from all the thousands of fireworks that had been shot off that night.
The next day there was an air quality warning for the town. I see the same thing happened in Omaha and Des Moines. It had to have been a record setting year for fireworks sales. I would say that the folks in the neighborhoods more than made up for all the public shows that did not take place.
McKinley Park Festival
July 25 will be the annual McKinley Park Festival. Lots of social distancing involved. No, there won’t be large inflatables like last year, but there will be the annual fishing contest for the kids. Plenty of room to social distance around the lake. There will be free hot dogs for all that show up before they are gone. Plus, there will be music at the band shell. There again, plenty of room for people to social distance and enjoy some music before the fireworks display to end the night. Outdoor activities have done well this year, so come out and enjoy the evening.
It will be interesting to see how things go with high school, college and NFL football this fall. I know a lot of people are hoping that there will be some kind of football for entertainment. The high school baseball and softball seasons seemed to have gone reasonably well. There were a few “situations,” but for all the things going on, they have done pretty well getting the seasons in.
There is getting to be some sports back on TV with professional golf and NASCAR already going, professional basketball and baseball looking to start the end of the month. Without some sports on TV this fall, the networks will be pretty bland just running reruns due to the fact there has not been any production done the last few months. It will be interesting to see what the networks “cobble” together to call programming.
Thought for the week —
Try to say nothing negative about anybody for three days, for forty-five days, for three months. See what happen to your life. ~Yoko Ono
