5 things to know from Monday night’s council meeting

GREENFIELD — 1. Public Works Director Lee Wright reported that the street project is underway and the council approved the first pay application for the project to Godberson-Smith in the amount of $153,841.81 at their meeting Monday.

InRoads Paving, Milling and Material of Des Moines recently milled the streets on the project. The next step will be to remove the remaining street and begin to pave new streets.

The entire process includes full concrete reconstruction of streets on segments along SW Mills, SW Second and E. Iowa Street, sanitary manhole and storm intake replacements along given road segments and ADA sidewalk improvements.

The project is due to be completed sometime in September.

2. The city council passed a change order taking $47,951.32 off of the final total of the rehabilitate runway project at the airport and approved a pay estimate to National Sealant and Concrete in the amount of $45,839.40 for the same project.

Recently the engineer on the project did a final walk-through and Wright reports everything is in order and the project is complete.

3. The council passed a lease agreement for Chamber/Main Street and Development to occupy one of the offices in the city hall building. The Chamber will pay the city $600 per year to occupy the space with utilities being included in the price.

The Chamber was forced to vacate their former office space in the old library when water damaged it early on during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Chamber will begin moving in next week.

4. The council’s public safety committee will proceed with exploring changes to scheduling and comp time in the police department. Committee members said making changes more fair to all involved could improve morale and lessen turnover in the department.

5. The council gave their authorization for Massena to host the Fourth of July celebration next year. Massena had postponed the celebration to Labor Day weekend but now wants to cancel that, postponing until next year. That would leave Fontanelle to host it in 2022 with Greenfield hosting in 2023. The council agreed that it’s only fair that Massena gets to host like the other two communities do.

Other action

In other action, the council approved liquor license renewals for Bloodline Irish Pub and Olive Branch, procured the administration of a housing grant to Southern Iowa Council of Governments and disallowed a Wind Energy Week proclamation.

Bill Hosfelt came to the council to ask that a storm sewer at a property at the corner of NW Grant and Fifth Streets be moved so that he can build a house on that lot.

The council agreed that it would not be a large financial burden to the city to move the storm sewer.

Wright was going to look into an estimate for material, equipment and labor for the council.
