Creston Farmers’ Market (Mondays)

The Creston Farmer’s Market is every Monday night from 4 to 6:30 p.m. at the southeast corner of McKinley Park in Creston. Follow Creston Farmer’s Market on Facebook to keep up on all the details.

Annual ‘Chalk the Town’ (July 1-3)

Chalk is now available for those interested in participating in the Annual “Chalk the Town” Activity, July 1 through July 3. Contact the Chamber of Commerce to make arrangements to pick some up.

Fridays after Five (July 3)

The concert series held on the east lawn of the Elks Lodge will feature a different musical artist each Friday from 5:08 to 7:08 p.m. until Sept. 4. This week’s musical guest will be James Biehn, and is sponsored by JC Grafix and Creston Elks Lodge.

Greater 8 and 5K Run/Walk, virtual event (July 3)

The Greater 8 and 5K Run/Walk is a virtual event this year! Your registration fees still go towards the trail expansion and maintenance in Creston. Every participant will receive a tri-blend race shirt ... sizes may be limited. Follow Greater 8 and 5K on Facebook for more race information! Night Hike at Green Valley (July 3-4)

Hike on trails in the dark and learn about what animals come out at night. Due to the large amount of participation last year, park staff will be limiting the number of people attending each night’s hike to 15 individuals. Send a message to Friends of Green Valley State Park on Facebook, or call the park office at 641-782-5131 to reserve a spot on the hike. If there’s enough interest, park staff will schedule more night hikes later in the summer so everyone has an opportunity to participate. The hike will meet at 9 p.m. at the south shelter house to hike the west trail. Expect to hike 2 to 3 miles on a grass trail. Due to limiting the number of participants they will offer night hikes on both July 3 and July 4.

Massena Tractor Ride (July 4)

Ride will leave from Massena Main Street at 8 a.m. Food will not be available so those interested must bring their own lunch. For more information call 712-779-0032

American Red Cross Blood Drive in Orient (July 6)

A Red Cross Blood Drive will take place at 124 S. Maple St. in Orient from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Future Founders 2020 Day Camp celebration event (July 10)

Future Founders 2020 is a youth entrepreneurship day camp being established for youth in Union County to learn about entrepreneurship in a fun and interactive way. A celebration for the program will be at 5 p.m. July 10 at McKinley Park.

Yoga Hike at Poe Hollow Park (July 11)

Ringgold County Conservation is hosting a Yoga Hike at Poe Hollow Park again this year. Join certified yoga teacher Michelle Wilson from 9 to 11 a.m., Saturday, July 11 for her signature Yoga Hike. Immerse yourself in the beauty of the trail, practice mindfulness and enjoy an all-levels yoga practice. This is a great activity to get out and enjoy the summer while also practicing social distancing.

Brandon Gibbs in concert at Warren Cultural Center (July 11)

Brandon Gibbs, multi-talented musician, writer and entertainer will perform at the Warren Cultural Center on the square in Greenfield, 7 p.m. July 11 in the last of WCC’s 2019-20 “Locals and Legends” series.

Brandon Gibbs is a national recording artist and guitar player with a powerful, soulful voice and is also proud to call Iowa his home. His music features genres of rock, blues, pop and country. Gibbs is also the front man for supergroup “Devil City Angels” (2014-present) featuring Rikki Rockett (Poison) Traci Guns (L.A.Guns) and Rudy Sarzo (Ozzy).

Shrek Jr. youth musical at Corning Opera House (July 15-16)

Shrek Jr. is this year’s annual summer youth musical production at the Corning Opera House Cultural Center, 800 Davis Ave. in Corning. Performances are at 7 p.m. July 15 and July 16. Cast members are from area elementary schools, including: Corning, Creston, Lenox, Mayflower Christian, Nodaway Valley, Southwest Valley and Storm Lake. The cast consists of Emma DeVore as Shrek, Taylor Brown as Fiona, Josie Douglas as teenage Fiona, Addy Morgan as young Fiona, Dyson Thompson as Lord Farquaad, Karissa Richey as Donkey, Piper Govig as Dragon, Saige Jones as Storyteller 1, Sam Stalker as Storyteller 2 and Peter Pan, Makenna Ramsey as Storyteller 3, Layla Konecne as Momma Ogre/Momma Bear, Quaid Eddy as Papa Ogre/Knight 2, Parker Brown as Pig1/Dwarf, Halle McManis as Pig 2, Curran Eddy as Pig 3, Drayden Thompson as Ugly Duckling/Bishop, JP Jones as Pinocchio, Lucy Eddy as Baby Bear, Megan Ramsey as Wicked Witch, Halle Burgmaier as Big Bad Wolf, Ryder Baird as Gingy, Brantley Hoakison as Captain of the Guard/Knight 3, Paul Kading as Knight 1 and 3, Allison Tye as Pied Piper, Ciara Konecne as Puss in Boots, Arianna Gepner as Rooster and Chloe Stull as Little Ogre.

Fourteen returning and thirteen first-time cast members rehearse two hours a day for about four weeks, memorizing lines, music and choreography. This the fifth year of youth musicals under thedirection of Cheryl Thompson and assisted by Bonnie Goodson-Gibeau and DeHeaton.

Chamber 23rd annual Summer Golf Tournament (July 31)

There is still time to sign up for the Creston Chamber of Commerce's 23rd annual summer golf tournament, scheduled to start at 11:30 a.m., July 31 at Crestmoor Golf Club and Pine Valley Golf Course. The event begins with lunch at 11:30 a.m. and a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. from both courses. A BBQ will also be served and prizes awarded to the winners at Crestmoor Golf Club. 2020’s ‘Relay For Life’ drive-through event (Aug. 1)

American Cancer Society’s ‘Relay For Life’ will be a drive-thru event this year, due to COVID-19. The event has moved from the Creston High School track to McKinley Lake for a “drive-through luminaria” from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Aug. 1.

KSIB 101.3 will be doing a special broadcast of the ceremony. Event participants who own a past "Relay For Life" T-shirt are asked to wear them. Cancer survivors attending can pick up a "2020 Survivor" pin to wear throughout the evening. There will also be luminaria pick-up and drop-off events at PCSB Bank's parking lot at 501 W. Taylor St., and luminaria bags available for pick-up from 4 until 6 p.m. on Hwy 34 July 11, July 18 and July 25. An online raffle will be taking place leading up to the relay on "Relay For Life of Southwest Iowa" Facebook page.
