A group of Creston youth closes in on the finish of the during the 2019 GRH 5K race. This year, due to the ongoing pandemic, the race will be held virtually July 3. Participants will be able to run a route of their choice equal to the distance they are competing in.

The annual Greater Regional Health Greater 8 and 5K race fundraiser is still currently accepting applicants and is set to take place Friday in a virtual format. This year’s theme: ‘Greater Together.’

“This year is virtual, so you can compete either the eight mile route or a five kilometer route anywhere,” said Mindy Stalker, race director.

The race offers two different routes — an eight-mile route, with an entry fee of $35, or a five-kilometer route, with an entry fee of $25. The entry fees are then put toward projects related to the various walking trails in Creston.

“This is our seventh year having this event of some sort. It’s evolved through the years, but every year the registration fee is a fundraiser for the improvement and expansion of the trails,” said Stalker.

Stalker said the event is an important one to her, as the trails have been a favorite of hers since first coming to Creston.

“When I moved here in 2005, there weren’t as many trails as there are now, and I have just always appreciated them,” said Stalker. “So I thought this would be a great way to give back to something I’m thankful for.”

This year, the race is solely sponsored by Greater Regional Health.

“This is around our third year being the title sponsor of the race,” said Kayla Hoffman, director of marketing and communications at Greater Regional Health. “That means we like to give as many volunteers as we can, we put forth some monetary donations to them. We get to be the help side of the race.”

Hoffman said the wellness aspect of the race is the reason GRH chooses to sponsor the event, as local trails play a vital role in community health.

“It’s something we found to be really important to give back to a really good health and fitness event that happens in the community,” said Hoffman. “Everything from this race go to the trails around Creston. Every penny raised for it goes to making our trails better.”

Due to the ongoing threat of COVID-19, the traditional gatherings related to the event are unable to be held. The race allows participants to run wherever they choose for the allotted distance.
