2020 Union County Queen and Princess contest

The 2020 Union County Fair will be celebrating its 56th anniversary of crowning the Union County Fair Queen and the 12th Annual Princess contest.

The Iowa State Fair and Union County fair boards are discussing plans for fairs to be held in some form this summer. Therefore, the queen committee is accepting applications at this time.

Contestants may enter from now through to June 19, and judging has been scheduled for the afternoon of July 12. The coronation will be held July 16, at the Union County Fairgrounds in Afton. Schedules are subject to change due to social distancing regulations.

East Union Emergency Meal Program

The East Union Emergency Meal Program, Mondays and Thursdays, has been extended through June 30. All the pickup sites will remain the same, and as follows:

• Fairview Housing from Noon to 12:10 p.m.

• Afton City Park from 12:15 to 12:30 p.m. — Southwest corner south side.

• Arispe City Park from 12:40 to 12:50 p.m. — east side.

• Lorimor Trailer Park from 12:20 to 12:30 p.m. — Corner of Main and Iowa Streets or at the Southwest Corner.

• Lorimor City Park from 12:35 to 12:45 p.m.

East side delivery door of school kitchen from 1:05 to 2:30 p.m. “blue delivery door” car trunk delivery. Three lunches and breakfasts are available each delivery day. The program is free to all children aged 1 through 18, and they are an equal opportunity provider.

Connections Area Agency on Aging

Connections Area Agency on Aging is offering emergency meal door delivery to seniors in our community. Frozen and shelf-stable meals can be ordered in increments of 5, and delivered on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. Care packs are also available which includes toilet paper, paper towels and other non-perishable food items. For more information please contact 1-800-432-9209.

Connections Area Agency announced that the state is continuing the farmers’ market voucher program for older Iowans. Seniors meeting income requirements can obtain vouchers that they can use at participating area farmers markets to buy $30 worth of fresh, locally grown produce. This year since our senior centers and offices are currently closed to the public, we will be asking individuals to call in and request an application.
