Bud Conner, 85, of Creston died Wednesday, May 6, 2020, in Creston. Celebration of life memorial services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, May 9, 2020, at Powers Funeral Home, 601 New York Ave. in Creston. All attending are asked to observe social distancing. Pastor Jodi Rushing will officiate the service. Burial will be at a later date at the Iowa Veteran's Cemetery in Van Meter. Open visitation with family receiving friends will take place one hour prior to the service, being held Saturday at Powers Funeral Home in Creston. Garland “Bud” Wayne Conner, son of Edith Mary (Black) Conner and Matthew David Conner, was born Jan. 15, 1935, in Tulsa, Okla. Bud graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1953. Bud enlisted with the U.S. Army in November 1953 and served his country for two years. He then transferred to the reserves and served for an additional nine years.
Bud was united in marriage to Betty JoAnn West June 7, 1954, at the Ottumwa Baptist Temple. They settled in Ottumwa before moving to Creston in 1969. Bud began his career with Iowa Southern Utility Company working his way up to a sales supervisor. After 44 years, Bud retired and was able enjoy his many activities in his free time. He called square dances for 30 years and went for motorcycles rides in all contiguous 48 states and the seven providences of Canada.
Bud was a member of the Creston United Methodist Church, Creston Civil Service Board and Administrative Board for Regency Park. He was a past president of the Creston Kiwanis.
Bud loved spending time and having conversations with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They brought him so much joy. He also enjoyed spending time with his church family as well as his morning coffee crew.
Bud is survived by his son Steven (Janet) Conner of Creston; daughter Renae (Jay) Sweet of Clarinda; six grandchildren: Heather (Ken) Evans of Great Falls, Montana, Heidi (John) Risetter of Truro, Kendra (Brad) Pickering of Sheridan, Missouri, Trevor (Erica) Conner of Cypress, Texas, Abby (Dustin) Hern of Grant City, Missouri and Brandon Sweet of Grimes; eight great-grandchildren with two on the way; sisters: Juanita (Tom) Silvers and Judy Conner, both of Washington; and many nieces, nephews and friends. Bud was preceded in death by his parents, wife JoAnn, brothers David Conner and Larry Conner and sister Joan Grimlie.
