Bridge replacement to close Highway 92 Monday east of Greenfield

Scott Suhr, District Transportation Planner with the Iowa DOT, reports that Highway 92 east of Greenfield will close March 16 for a bridge replacement just west of Henry A. Wallace Road, or Adair County P-33

“We’re planning on closing the road at the beginning of construction March 16. We hope to have it back open by October 1,” Suhr said. “That’s, of course, dependent on weather and the contractor’s schedule.”

The detour for the project will take eastbound motorists south on Highway 25 to Orient, east on 310th St. to Henry A. Wallace and back north to Highway 92. Westbound traffic’s detour will be the exact opposite.

“We remind motorists to drive with caution, obey the work zones and pay attention to the project on 511ia.org, which is a good website to follow whenever you’re traveling across the country, going on vacation or trying to determine whether the roads are in good enough condition to drive in winter. We try to direct people there,” Suhr said.

The project is part of the DOT’s regular replacement of bridges as they approach their projected lifespan.

“We’ve done deck overlays on it in years past and it’s just gotten to the point that it needs to be replaced,” Suhr said. “We’re going to make it a wider, safer bridge than what is there today.”

The Adair County Sheriff’s Office posted a warning on their Facebook page last Tuesday for motorists to drive safely around the work zone and the detour while this project is underway.

“I recognize that the motoring public may likely find their own alternative to the official detour. Please, please, use extreme cuation if you take [rock] roads around the detour. Reduce your speed, alway yield half the roadway, be patient and drive defensively,” Sheriff Jeff Vandewater said. “Realize there will likely be extra traffic taking the same route as you. Be especially cautious of large farm equipment during planting and possibly into harvest.”
