Area wrestling district preview: Panthers in Atlantic, Underwood District loaded with ranked wrestlers

District wrestling for News Advertiser area teams kick off for Saturday at noon. Multiple area wrestlers in Class 2A and Class 1A made the cut at sectional last Saturday to advance, and are now a first or second-place finish away from an opportunity to wrestle at the traditional state wrestling tournament in Des Moines at the famed Wells Fargo Arena.

Listed below are where you can find the News Advertiser-area wrestlers in action Saturday afternoon.


Creston had four wrestlers advance out of Class 2A Sectional 13 to make it to districts.

Garon Wurster (132), Hayden Green (170), Class 2A 182 No. 2 Jackson Kinsella and Class 2A 190 No. 4 Sam Chapman.

Other ranked wrestlers in the Panthers’ weight classes in Atlantic are Winterset’s Class 2A 132 No. 6 Bryce Hatten and Class 2A 195 No. 7 Carter Maynes of Red Oak.


Underwood will host a bevy of area wrestlers in Class 1A from Southwest Valley, Nodaway Valley and Bedford/Lenox.

Southwest Valley sends Adyson Lundquist (106), Kaden Jacobs (182) and Tallen Myers (220).

Nodaway Valley advanced four wrestlers from sectionals, two ranked. Class 1A 113 No. 9 Elliot Cooney and Class 1A 160 No. 8 Austin Wilson lead the charge. Ben Breheny (120) and Tyler Breheny (152) will also be joining the ranked Wolverines.

For Bedford/Lenox, four wrestlers will be wrestling for a chance to advance to the state tournament. Class 1A 170 No. 4 Drew Venteicher leads the group. Mizael Gomez (106), Jake Cox (152) and Devin Whipple (285) will join Venteicher in a quest to wrestle under the lights of The Well.

Other ranked wrestlers in area wrestler’s weight classes at the Underwood district meet are Underwood’s Class 1A 106 No. 1 Gable Porter, Oakland Riverside’s Class 1A 113 No. 4 Jace Rose, Underwood’s Class 1A 120 No. 2 Stevie Barnes, AHSTW’s Class 1A 152 No. 7 Jaedan Rassmussen, Audubon’s Class 1A 220 No. 7 Luke Mosinsk, ASHTW’s Class 1A 285 No. 8 Brady Canada and Treynor’s Class 1A 285 No. 9 Brock Fox.


Making the trip to Pleasantville are six Mount Ayr wrestlers and two grapplers from East Union.

Class 1A 106 No. 10 Drew Ehlen, Class 1A 120 No. 10 Bryce Shaha, Class 1A 138 No. 9 Trae Ehlen are the ranked Raiders making the trip. Jarrett Webb (113), Jaydon Knight (145) and Donovan Morales (220) are the other three Raiders wrestling for a chacne at state.

East Union’s Jarryn Stephens (120) and Brant Looney (170) are the two Eagles taking the mat Saturday. At 195, Louis Gonzales will also wrestle for East Union after falling in his sectional final. Gonzales didn't need a wrestleback and took a true second-place to advance.

Other ranked wrestlers for area wrestler’s weight classes in Pleasantville are Colfax-Mingo’s Class 1A 138 No. 8 Cyden Fitch, South Hamilton’s Class 1A 170 No. 8 Lane Swenson and Ogden’s Class 1A 220 No. 3 Blake Haub.
