1990- 30 Years Ago

Thefts were up in Greenfield during 1989. The good news is that the number of cases solved also went up and the amount of merchandise recovered was way up. Greenfield Police Chief Ken Hopper in his annual report to the Greenfield City Council last week that of the 42 thefts reported, 24 were solved. The loss of thefts in 1988 was $11,224.14 and in 1989 it was $17, 172.43.

Kenneth (Gene) Huddleson will be the new Adair County Assessor when Wayne Sump retires on March 31 of this year. Mr. Huddleson, who has been a deputy in the office here nearly ten years, was appointed recently by the County Conference Board.

Adair County Mutual Insurance Association has purchased the former pharmacy building on the northeast side of the square and is preparing to move its offices next door to larger facilities. But before the move, a vault had to be constructed for safe-keeping of records and policies.

1960- 60 Years Ago

Elmer O. Schuler of Eureka township was elected president of the Adair County Feeders Association at the directors meeting following the banquet and meeting Thursday night of last week at the Fontanelle Lutheran parish hall.

The first ewe to lamb in the flock at the Vern Thomas farm southeast of Greenfield did things up in a big way, with quadruplets. The lambs were born Jan. 16 in the middle of sub-zero weather, but they’re doing fine. Mr. Thomas has 75 head of ewes which will start lambing in a few days.

The C & M men’s team and Sam’s Insurance women’s team are the new Greenfield city team bowling champions, following the completion of team competition last week. The C & M team was composed of Ralph Ladd, Dwight Marcum, L.A. Kirlin, Walter Wallace, and Marion Heuckendorf. The Sam’s Insurance team was composed of Mrs. Sam Thompson, Mrs. Charles Harris, Mrs. Bob Cullen, Mrs. Leo Pitcher, and Mrs. Mert Linthicum.

1930- 90 Years Ago

G.W. Morgan owner of the Grand Theatre is expecting an R.C.A. expert this week to make a survey of his theatre and to make recommendations to improve the acoustics of the room preliminary to installed the same equipment as Corning theatre for talkie shows.

The county repair crew moved into their new repair shop at the county yards this week. The shop was completed the first of the year and will house the machinery used for repairing trucks, tractors, and road machinery.

Twenty-six men were registered in the vaccination school, which was in session at the court house here Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of this week. The course was under the direction of Dr. W.J. Miller.
