Five Panthers on KMA All-Decade basketball

The Hawkeye 10 Conference all-decade basketball team announced by KMA Sports Director Derek Martin includes five former and current Creston players.

Martin’s all-decade boys basketball team from the 2010s includes Jay Wolfe of Creston on the first team and 2019 graduate Kylan Smallwood on the second team. Guard Luke Eblen, a 2011 graduate, received honorable mention.

On the KMA all-decade girls team, current Creston junior center Kelsey Fields is on the third team and 2019 graduate Brielle Baker received honorable mention.

Wolfe, a 2015 graduate, went on to become an NAIA First Team All-American in leading Briar Cliff University to the national tournament in 2019. Wolfe scored 22.7 points with 10 rebounds per game as a senior for the Panthers, after averaging 18.6 points as a junior.

Smallwood, who earned a starting role at Midland University in Nebraska as a freshman this season, concluded his Creston career averaging 21.3 points and 10.6 rebounds in his senior season. The two previous seasons he averaged 22.4 and 18.4 points in becoming the school’s second-leading all-time scorer behind Kyle McCann.

As a senior for the Panthers, Eblen averaged 7.6 points with a team-leading 106 assists and 29 steals. He was second on the team in rebounding behind Luke Neitzel with 109 for the season. He had 113 assists as a junior with 37 steals while averaging 7.5 points. He went on to play at Grand View University.

Fields had a big sophomore season for Creston last year to get on the recruiting trail of many colleges, including a scholarship offer from NCAA Division II Northwest Missouri State. She averaged 15.9 points and 14.1 rebounds last year, and in the current season is averaging 19.0 points and 14.0 rebounds. She is currently the Class 3A leader in rebounding and surpassed current Central College senior Jenna Taylor as the program’s five-player career rebounding leader.

Baker finished her career as Creston’s all-time leading scorer with 1,189 points. As a senior she averaged 15.3 points, 4.4 rebounds, 3.0 steals and 3.3 assists per game. She is the school’s all-time steals leader. She began averaging double figures in scoring as a sophomore at 15.1 points, increasing to an 18.0 average as a junior. She is currently a freshman on the Southwestern Community College team.
