Christy qualifies for Div. II championships, Shuey and Smallwood see floor time

EVANSVILLE, Ind. — Taryn Christy of the University of Illinois Springfield placed fifth at the 2019 NCAA Division II Midwest Region Cross Country championships on Saturday.

Christy is the daughter of 1985 Creston High School graduates Joel Christy and Deborah Davis. Grandparents are Jack and Cheri Davis of Creston and Bob and Donna Christy, now of Bondurant.

Christy qualified for the 2019 NCAA Division II National Championships to be held on Nov. 23 in Sacramento, California.

With 600 meters remaining in the 6,000-meter race, Christy was in 15th place, but passed 10 runners to finish fifth overall and earn an automatic spot in the national championships. Christy had a tie of 21:09.9, which was a new school record.

As a team the UIS women had a final score of 395, which placed 15th out of 32 teams.

Shuey logs time for Salve

NEWPORT, R.I. – Morgan Shuey, former Southwest Valley guard, played all four quarters and logged 25 minutes of floor time in Salve Regina University’s season opener Wednesday night.

The Seahawks lost to Smith College 84-43, but Shuey’s collegiate debut saw her log the most floor time of women off the bench. She scored nine points, going 2 of 5 from the floor and 3-for-4 from the free-throw line.

Shuey also had three rebounds, three assists and a steal the loss.

Smallwood scores 10

Across his last three games, Creston native and current Midland University guard Kylan Smallwood has scored 10 points for Midland men’s basketball.

Smallwood scored five points against York College. The Warriors lost to York 72-65. Smallwood added a rebound and an assist to his total in the loss.

Against University of Nebraska-Omaha, Smallwood was held scoreless on three attempts. He had eight rebounds, seven coming from the defensive end. Midland lost 72-53.

Tuesday night against Concordia the Warriors lost 95-71 with Smallwood scoring five points. He scored from 3-point range and converted on two free throw attempts in the loss.
