I think winter got a little jump on this year

I can’t say I am impressed with the Arctic front moving through this past week. If this is any indication of what is to come this winter, I don’t like it!

I’m sure global warming will get the rap for the cold weather. The new PC language is “climate change,” if you don’t know by now. Whatever it is, it looks like we could be in for another super cold winter. My thought is: you just can’t fool mother nature. She is going to do what she wants. So get that extra warm clothing bought or out, it looks like we are going to need it.

Thanksgiving

Just two weeks away from the famous Thursday holiday. Of course, the day after is called Black Friday when even us amateur shoppers can compete the professionals. I see some of the stores have already started putting out their “Black Friday” pricing. If it keeps going like this you are going to be seeing Black Friday pricing starting around Valentines Day. With Thanksgiving coming late this year, you have less than a month to get all those presents bought.

Debt

I read this week that over 35 million people are still trying to pay off last Christmas’s credit card debt. In fact, credit card debt is now at an all time high. Good thing is everyone who wants a job, has one. Nothing like trying to pay off credit card debt with those 18-21% interest payments. I also read where 33% of car buyers have negative equity in their car when they trade it in the first half of this year, which means they are still haven’t paid off the old car while purchasing a new or used car. The consumer is 70% of the economy. But what happens when the consumer is spend happy like the government? Even the cheap interest rates are not going to save us from the next recession.

Movies

Looks like there will be lots of block buster movies this Christmas season. Some of the trailers I’ve seen look pretty interesting. I’m sure Frozen 2 will be one of the big ones for all the kids. The Star Wars buffs will be blessed with a new movie. So get ready for another round of light saber fun.

The one that could be another blockbuster is the Mr. Rogers movie staring Tom Hanks. He always does such a great job of portraying characters like Forest Gump and many others over the years. Also “The Rock” is back in the new Jumanji:The next level. So get your movie and popcorn budget up to speed. There will be lots of things to take in over the next few weeks.

Free movies

This week the free Christmas season movies start at the Fridley Theatre here in Creston. Two show times every Saturday and one on Sundays for the next five weekends. Free tickets here at the paper office and many other local merchants. Shows on Saturdays are at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. The Sunday show is at noon. A new movie each week. This weekend is Spider-man: Into the Spider-verse. So drop the kids off and get a little parental shopping time in without their help. Or maybe even a nap. Of course, if you’re like me you just want to catch up on a movie you haven’t seen.

Crops

Looks like some of the farmers are catching up on getting their crops out. The frozen ground may have been a blessing in some ways.
