“When the weather starts to turn this cold, it must mean the end of fall sports,” said Patty Cakes.
"You're right," I said."The post-season is in sight."
"What is going on?" asked Legion Steve.
“The volleyball team will be trying to extend their already great season with a run in the post-season,” I said.
“Anything else?” asked JL.
“The cross-country teams did really well at the state-qualifying meet,’ said Decatur Spence.
“They sure did,” said Big Red.“It is going to be shopping and more shopping in Fort Dodge after the stat meet.”
“You driving?” asked JL.
“You got the new wheels,” said Big Red.“A road trip would help break it in.”
“You get the directions and I’ll drive,” said JL.
“Let’s talk about the cross-country teams,” said Legion Steve.
“Good idea,” said Decatur Spence.
“I second that good idea,” I said.
“You have the facts in front of you,” said Legion Steve.“Go ahead and fill us in.”
“I’ll do that,” I said.“Josh Baudler broke open a close race with a state-ranked runner from Sidney and placed first.NV also got state-qualifying places from Toby Bower, Tyler Breheny and Ben Breheny.Doug Berg finished just out of the Top 15 with a 16th place finish.The Wolverines won the team title, so everyone will run the Fort Dodge course.”
“Didn’t the girls do well, too?” asked P. Buckmiller.
“Did you just get here?” I asked.
“Just walked in the door,” said P. Buckmiller.“Heard what you were talking about and had to get some kudos in for the girls.”
“Glad to hear from you,” I said.“Yes, the girls finished third as a team, defeating Earlham by one point, to advance to the state meet as a team.Maybe, that’s a good omen.I believe the girls won their state title a few years ago by just one point.”
“Any individual honors for them?” asked Decatur Spence.
“Yes,” I said.“Sophia Broers finished fourth and Reagan Weinheimer finished fifth.”
“Awesome job by all the kids,” said Patty Cakes.
“So who do we give the WOW to?’ asked Decatur Spence.
“We’re going to have to get going,” I said.“We have several this week.Our winners are all individual qualifiers for the state cross-country meet.Sophia Broers, Reagan Weinheimer, Josh Baudler, Toby Bower, Tyler Breheny and Ben Breheny, you are our Wolverines of the Week.”
“Only fitting,” said P. Buckmiller.
Hall of Fame
“I can almost guess where the HOF vote goes this week,” said Patty Cakes.
“What are you thinking that I’m thinking about?” I asked.
“Wouldn’t want to say that three times fast,” said Legion Steve.
“Anyway,” I said.“Patty Cakes is probably right.We’re going to add more pictures to our Wall of Fame.Team pictures of both cross-country teams, as well as individual pictures of all the individual qualifiers.”
“We’re going to have to build a bigger wall,” said Decatur Spence.
“I hope so,” I said.
