Area volleyball roundup: Southwest Valley wins home tournament, Mount Ayr and Murray play in Bedford

SWV crowned champions

CORNING – Southwest Valley took first place at its own volleyball tournament Saturday, winning five straight matches.

SWV had 2-0 wins over Exira-EHK, AHSTW, Audubon and Southeast Warren before facing AHSTW again in the final.

The Timberwolves dropped a set for the first time all day, but won the decisive third set to win 2-1.

Southwest Valley was able to match the intensity it brought from the opening set to the final set of the day, proving to be a big part of is success.

“I was very proud of the girls for coming into (Saturday) ready to play,” said Timberwolves head coach Lindsay Wetzel. “They were ready to play first thing in the morning and were just as up and playing hard in the last match of the day.”

The Timberwolves were led in kills by Jentry Schafer with 35 and Kayley Myers had 25 across all five matches.

Isabelle Inman had 72 assists with Schafer and Inman tied for the most digs of the day with 19 apiece. SWV was also present in the blocks department with Schafer tallying six solo blocks.

“We are continuing to work hard in practice and refine our weaknesses and continue getting better as we are fast approaching the end of the season. We want to be playing our best ball at the end of the year going into post-season play,” said Wetzel.

The Wolverines have dropped out of the IGHSAU’s Class 1A volleyball rankings after holding the position through the first four weeks of the season. Southwest Valley was last ranked at No. 15 in Class 1A.

Lenox takes third

CORNING – The Lenox Tigers finished third at Southwest Valley’s tournament Saturday.

The Tigers had three wins, winning their pool over CAM (2-0), Southeast Warren (2-1) and Panorama (2-1).

Lenox lost to AHSTW 2-0 in the semi-finals, but beat Southeast Warren again 2-1 for the third place win.

Across all five matches TJ Stoaks had 29 kills for the team leading figure. Cassidy Nelson was not far behind her with 17 kills.

Camryn Doglas had two kill errors on 32 attempts as the most efficient hitter for Lenox.

Kayla Yzaguirre and Stoaks both had the high for digs with 25 and Luana Plese had 58 assists. Jordan England had 10 blocks, including three solo blocks in the final match of the day.

The win moves Lenox to 13-7, making he 2019 Tigers the winningest team in the QuickStats era.

Mount Ayr goes 1-3

BEDFORD – Mount Ayr volleyball dropped three at Bedford’s tournament Saturday, but picked up one win over Central Decatur 2-0.

The Raiderettes had losses to Bedford 2-0, Class 1A No. 1 Sidney 2-0 and Class 1A No. 11 East Mills 2-0.

The Raiderettes had four kills against Bedford, two coming from Sam Stewart. She also had two digs.

Payten Lambert led the Raiderttes in kills with three against Sidney. Kaylie Shields had four assists.

Adalyn Reynolds and Stewart had five kills each in the Raiderettes’ lone win. Shields had seven assists and Stewart had seven digs in the 21-12, 21-16 win.

Channler Henle had four kills for the team lead against East Mills. The Raiderettes did not score more than 10 points in either set, falling 21-7, 21-6.

Murray winless in Bedford

BEDFORD – Murray also played in Bedford’s volleyball tournament, losing four matches.

Murray lost to Stanton and Central Decatur 2-0. The Lady Mustangs were able to take a set from Bedford, but lost 2-1, and lost to Lamoni 2-0.

Against Stanton Twila Barber and Kinzee Eggers each had two kils. Michelle McBurney and Bailey Frederick had two digs apiece in the 21-8, 21-13 loss.

Newton had seven assists against Bedford and Eggers had five kills and four blocks. Emma Decker had four kills.

Against Lamoni Decker had tw kills and Barber had two assists and two digs. Eggers had three blocks.

Against Central Decatur Barber had seven kills and Newton had nine assists. Eggers and Decker had four and three kills, respectively.

Central Decatur 3, Murray 1

LEON – Central Decatur topped Murray 3-1 Monday night.

The Cardinals won the first two sets 25-11 and 25-15 before dropping the third set 25-19. Murray lost the match winning set 25-23.

Kinzee Eggers had nine kills and four blocks.

Rylee Newton had 11 assists and Twila Barber had five digs.

“We just laid an egg for the first two and a half matches before we ever started playing,” said Murray head coach Jerry Shields. “We actually started plaiyng volleyball after the third match.”
