Lewis Central 48, Creston/O-M 8
COUNCIL BLUFFS - Undefeated and fourth-ranked (Associated Press) Lewis Central showed its big play capability both through the air and on the ground in opening Class 3A District 9 play Friday with a 48-8 victory over Creston/Orient-Macksburg.
The Titans scored twice in the first quarter on a 23-yard run by Jonah Pomrenke and an 82-yard keeper by quarterback Bret Kobes.
The Titans moved in front 35-0 in the second quarter on two short-yardage TD runs by Bryson Bowman and a 53-yard pass from Kobes to Bowman.
Creston/O-M's offense got into the red zone twice in the first half, finally converting on fourth-and-goal from the 4-yard line on the final play of the half on a touchdown pass from Eli Loudon to Brance Baker. Loudon ran in the two-point conversion for a 35-8 score at halftime.
The Titans put Iowa's 35-point running clock mercy rule into effect in the third quarter by moving in front 48-8 on Brady Miller's 71-yard burst up the middle and a 49-yard pass from Kobes to Thomas Fidone.
Reserves played out much of the fourth quarter under the running clock as Lewis Central improved to 5-0 overall and 1-0 in district play. Creston/O-M fell to 2-3 overall and 0-1 and travels to ADM (Adel) next week.
Panther quarterback Eli Loudon finished 18 of 45 passing for 213 yards and one touchdown. Creston/O-M had no turnovers in the game. Leading receivers were Cael Kralik with eight catches for 119 yards and Luke Latham with 42yards on three receptions. The Panthers managed only 42 yards rushing in the game on 15 attempts.
Kobes finished 11 of 15 passing for 260 yards and two touchdowns for the Titans. Leading the Panther defense with seven tackles each were Gage Skarda, Andy Mills and Rylan Luther.
Southwest Valley 22, Nodaway Valley 8
GREENFIELD – Southwest Valley opened Class A District 9 play with a 22-8 win over Nodaway Valley Friday night.
It was a defensive battle in the first half with neither side able to get a scoring drive together. Both sides took chances to keep drives alive on fourth down attempts, but were met with a stop behind the line of scrimmage for a turnover on downs.
The breakthrough in the points column came off a Tallen Myers block on a Nodaway Valley punt for a safety.
The Wolverines were pinned on their own 2-yard line and had a three and out, and the punt from Colby Harris was swallowed up by Myers who got a hand on it for two points before halftime.
The Timberwolves received the kick in the second and on their second drive they drove down the field and capped it off with a 38-yard score from Brendan Knapp.
Knapp's score along with a Kade Hutchings kick made it a 9-0 game with 7:21 left in the third quarter.
The Wolverines' pass attack caused a turnover not long after as Knapp picked off Nathan Russell, but a methodical run attack stalled the drive near the NV 40-yard line, resulting in a punt.
Knapp had two interceptions on the day on defense. At quarterback, he threw one to Colby Harris.
A conversion on fourth down for the Timberwolves helped extend a SWV drive to the goal line, ultimately ending in a keeper from Knapp for another score. A missed kick from Hutchings made it 15-0 with 4:47 remaining in the game.
The Wolverines responded with a 57-yard completion from Russell to Hunter Ernst giving NV a first and goal situation. The Wolverines punched it in at the goal line with a 4-yard score from Tony Ayase.
A 2-point conversion completed to Caelen DeVault made it a 15-8 game and on the following kick off the Timberwolves returned an on-side kick with 3:51 left in the game.
The score was added insurance for SWV as it picked up its first win against a district opponent.
