30 Years Ago - 1989

“I Want it All” was the theme of the 1989 Greenfield High School Homecoming, and the students came close to getting their wish. From an ideal fall evening for their pep rally to another crisp clear evening with a full moon riding over the football field and a decisive football victory for their team, things worked out just fine. Then it was on to the high school gym to crown Becki Dingman queen before a capacity on the stage decorated in mint green, silver, lavender, and royal blue.

The Greenfield City Council at its meeting Tuesday night awarded a contract for three street intersection improvements and approved a lease for the hangar space to the Antique Preservation Association. Burger and Son was the low bidder on the street project, with a bid of $39, 875. The three intersections are on Highway 25 at Northeast Hayes, East Iowa and Southeast Jackson. The other bid from Havens Bin Construction was for $42, 707 after correction of a mathematical error.

A week of beautiful fall sunshine following the early September monsoon has helped push Adair County corn and soybean crops toward maturity. Some chopping of corn for silage has started here. It is estimated that about 85 percent of the corn in the county is now safe from frost. A few soybean fields have shed their leaves, but other beans are still green and not yet safe from frost damage.

Pancake Day drew 1,200 people to the Greenfield Fire Station Thursday evening for the annual fall supper which this year launched a busy three days. The crowd was down about 50 people from last year but attendance was considered very good. Donations solicited by the Greenfield Chamber of Commerce to help defray the cost of Pancake Day will again fall short of the expenses.

The Greenfield Lady Tigers beat Bedford for the first time since 1984 to extend their volleyball unbeaten string to nine games Tuesday night. Coach Sally Corcoran credited the conditioning and toughness of her players for the victory, which went the full five matches. Greenfield won the first two, 15-10 and 15-2, but faltered as Bedford came back to win the next two, 2-15 and 5-15. Then Greenfield won a tight 15-11 match.

60 Years Ago - 1959

Over 20,000 bluegill and more than a thousand bass were stocked in 63 Adair County farm ponds Thursday of last week. Most of the ponds had received bass earlier this year. The fish come from U.S. Fish and Wildlife hatcheries, and are ordered through the Soil Conservation Service here.

Over 100 planeloads of visitors are expected at the Greenfield airport Sunday for the fourth annual Service Club flight breakfast. And if the weather doesn’t interfere, they will be joined by close to 1,000 other guests who will drive out from Greenfield and surrounding area for breakfast.

90 Years Ago - 1929

`The Burlington Pig Crop Special an educational train which is now being operated by the Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy railroad and the Extension Service of Iowa State College, will stop at Greenfield, 1:30 p.m., September 25. Several members of the Extension Service of Iowa State College will be with the train to explain various phases of hog raising.

Local football fans are looking forward to the first game of the season to be played on the Greenfield gridiron, Friday afternoon when Coach Dallanger’s team will meet Massena at the fair grounds to receive their “baptism of fire”. The coach has not announced his lineup for the game, but from what a Free Press reporter could learn, he is expecting a tough contest. Massena has the strongest team they have produced in years, and are coming here with the express intention of knocking Greenfield for a row of touchdowns in the first quarter.
