NV celebrates homecoming next week

Nodaway Valley Community Schools students and staff will launch into a full-blown space-themed Homecoming Week this year as they celebrate the yearly week-long event from Monday, Sept. 23 to 28.

"Invading Homecoming" will be the theme for NV's Homecoming as the Wolverines have a fun-filled week leading up to Friday's home football game against Southwest Valley and Saturday night's coronation and dance.

According to Sarah Jensen, Homecoming Advisor, Thursday evening will be the annnual Pancake Supper at the former Greenfield Fire Station, from 4 to 7 p.m., which is followed by the Homecoming Parade. The parade will line up in front of the school, travel south on NW Second Street and travel counter-clockwise around the square, exiting to the parking lot northwest of the square and returning to the school, where a community pep rally will then be held.

At that pep rally, the pep band will perform, cheerleaders will cheer, athletes will talk and the Homecoming Court will be introduced with the winners announced.

Homecoming King candidates are Tyler Vandewater, Josh Baudler, Clay Hohertz and Colby Harris. Homecoming Queen candidates are Paisley Kintigh, McKynna Newbury, Mallory Kuhns and Kynna Young. Junior attendants will be Macy Kuhns and Tony Ayase; sophomore attendants are Abi Newbury and Elliot Cooney and freshman attendants are Sophia Chafa and Doug Berg.

The Homecoming Court again will be announced at the home football game Friday night with the formal coronation occuring Saturday evening in the high school auditorium.

Because of the high school gym being unavailable due to roof damage from a storm recently, dance attendees will then walk from the high school to the elementary gymnasium where the dance will be held.

"With the gym not being able to be used in the high school, if there's inclement weather, we'll just have to cancel the parade and pep rally," Jensen said. "Something new we're planning that we haven't done is that we're planning to do Powder Puff Football. We'll let the boys be the coaches and the girls can do a little Powder Puff following the pep rally."

Each of the high school grades will decorate merchants' windows around the Greenfield square this Saturday for the community to enjoy throughout the week. Freshmen will decorate the window at Support Services, sophomores will decorate Wireman Electric, the juniors will decorate at The Corner and seniors will decorate at Colors.

Dress up days at the high school will include: Monday - Pajama Day; Tuesday - College Wear Day; Wednesday - U.S.A. Day; Thursday - Throwback Thursday; Friday - Black and Purple Day.
