Electrical Technology Instructor Jon Oswald joins SWCC staff

New Electrical Technologies instructor Jon Oswald has joined the SWCC instructional staff. Oswald began his first teaching position Monday and begins instructing classes on Aug 26. Oswald is joining the SWCC staff after a nine-year tenure with Wellman Dynamics Acquisition, LLC, as the staff electrician.

Education and career

Oswald began his career right out of high school in 2000 by joining the electricians' union in Des Moines as an apprentice electrician. Since then Oswald has worked in a variety of electrician roles with various companies and has worked with electrical codes from residential, to commercial and industrial.

“I’ve seen just about everything when it comes to electrical work,” said Oswald. “Whether it was the lower levels of a hospital or a residential house.”

Oswald intends to enter his instructional role with a job trainer’s approach, using the already established coursework curriculum standard to the electrical technologies program along with hands on training and patience, which will be supplemented by Oswald’s nearly 20 years of experience.

“Everyone is going to be kind of different,” said Oswald “I’ve always been one to be kind of patient with everyone, take your time, be thorough and be safe.”

Oswald plans to focus his first year students on the electrical codes and residential electrical. His second and third year students will be geared toward the more advanced industrial side of the course work.

“I’m looking forward to putting the tools down.” Oswald said with a chuckle. “I always did enjoy training new guys.”

Oswald currently resides in Murray with his wife Amanda, two sons Hayz and Tivon and two daughters Amaria and Haylo. In his free time, Oswald likes to work on his cattle operation. He also enjoys hunting and fishing.
