Diagonal Lions Club sidewalk project

The Lions have been serving the Diagonal community since 1953

The Diagonal Lions Club’s latest project is complete and ready for the upcoming school year. Two blocks of new sidewalk improvements extending east of Diagonal Community School will provide walking and biking students a safer choice than the street for getting to and from school.

Last year, the Diagonal Lions Club noticed students walking or biking on the street before and after school, which is also the time when many parents are driving their kids to and from school. This made for a congested street and was not safe for the students on foot or bikes. The Lions Club wanted to provide these students a safer choice to get to school and at the same time encourage other students in town to start the healthier choice of walking or biking to school.

Along with committing its own dollars to the project, the Diagonal Lions Club received grants from South Central Iowa Community Foundation and Ringgold County HELP Youth Pod. The grants were administered by the Iowa Lions Foundation. These partnerships were critical to bringing this project to fruition.

In addition to this project, the Diagonal Lions Club had another busy year, working hard to better the Diagonal community. Beginning last year, this included recruiting and hosting WHO’s RVTV on Labor Day Weekend. Although the weather was very wet during the Labor Day Celebration festivities, it didn’t dampen the mood as the Lions Club found ways to make fun in the mud with the RVTV crew.

For students at Diagonal Community School, the Lions Club sponsors several yearly events and activities, including the wiener roast on Halloween, helping Santa sack candy at the Diagonal Christmas concert, supporting Diagonal Archery, Diagonal Yearbook, providing scholarships for Diagonal seniors, supporting swimming lessons for Diagonal students, Diagonal Little League, Diagonal PTO and partnering with the Mount Ayr Lions to provide vision screenings for Diagonal students.

The Lions Club wants to thank the countless volunteers that help make the events, activities, and programs that the Lions Club sponsor and support possible. With the help of the entire community, the Lions Club continues to make Diagonal a better place to call home.

The Diagonal Lions Club is proud to serve the Diagonal community and remains committed to bettering Diagonal through its philanthropic efforts.
