Area playoff softball roundup: East Union, Nodaway Valley's season comes to a close

MOUNT AYR – Caroline McAlexander was nearly perfect Wedensday night, allowing three hits in a complete game shutout of Logan-Magnolia to advance to the Class 2A Region 3 semifinal today (Friday) against Underwoot (16-10).

McAlexander struck out six Lo-Ma batters en route to the win. She was hitless at the plate, but drew one walk.

Mount Ayr’s power stroke was found at the right time as a Halsie Barnes solo shot in the third inning was all Mount Ayr needed, giving the Raiderettes a one-run lead. Alexa Andrerson matched Barnes, hitting a solo homer of her own in the next inning to give the Raiderettes a 2-0 lead.

The Raiderettes tacked on two more off the legs of Jaycee Knight and Sam Stewart to cap off the contest.

Anderson and Stewart had multi-hit nights, going 2-for-3. Stewart hit a double to join Anderson and Barnes as the only three Raiderettes with extra-base hits.

Collins-Maxwell 10, East Union 0 (6)

COLLINS – East Union’s season came to a close Wednesday at the hand of No. 1 team in Class 1A, falling to Collins-Maxwell 10-0 in the Region 3 quarterfinals.

EU held the differential to 1-0 through the first three innings, but was unable to claim the lead as Collins-Maxwell put three on the board in the fourth inning and six on the board in the sixth.

The Eagles did not record a hit in the loss.

East Union finishes the season 9-15 with a Pride of Iowa Conference record of 3-10.

Colfax-Mingo 12, Nodaway Valley 2 (6)

COLFAX – Nodaway Valley lost to Colfax-Mingo Wednesday night, falling 12-2 in the Class 2A Region 1 quarterfinals.

The previously ranked Tigerhawks scored three in the first inning and five in the third to give temselves an 8-1 lead before cutting the game short by run-rule in the sixth inning.

Nodaway Valley stats were unavailable at time of press.

Nodaway Valley closes its season 11-17 with a 3-10 record against Pride of Iowa foes.
