The month of June is the kick-off to a very busy summer in Creston. The following is a partial list of some of the events that will be happening in our great community this month. On June 8, the Creston Citywide Garage Sale will take place from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. Southside Booster and Old Tyme Power Club will hold an old fashioned homemade ice cream social and fundraiser from 1 to 4:30 p.m. June 15 at Rainbow Park. On June 22, the gates at McKinley Park open at 5 p.m. with the Creston Park and Rec Party in the Park with music starting at 6 p.m. The 11th Annual Elm’s Club Bike Night will take place on June 29. Crest Area Theatre Group will present the “Lyrical Version” of the Music Man beginning at 6 p.m. June 30 at the McKinley Park Bandshell, and if inclement weather, it will take place at the Performing Arts Center at SWCC.
Of course there are all of the activities associated with the 10,000 Crestonians Fourth of July, Celebrate 150 Years. The summer wraps up with the 42nd Annual Hot Air Balloon Days on Sept. 20, 21 and 22. For more information on more events during June, July or later months, visit the Creston Chamber of Commerce website at www.crestoniowachamber.com and review the calendar on the home page.
In addition to all of these activities in June, the Creston Farmers Market is now open from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Mondays at McKinley Park through Sept. 30. You can also visit the Union County Historical Village, located in McKinley Park from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sundays through Labor Day.
Also in June, the chamber will begin the Image Enhancement Committee’s 14th year of honoring yards/homes in Creston. During June, July, August, September and October, three houses will be honored each month, weather permitting. Each home selected will receive a gift from either Creston True Value, Creston Super Walmart or Green Valley Pest Control and Lawn Care.
Please nominate a yard to be considered by the committee. Contact the chamber with the address or the location.
Celebrate 150 years with the 10,000 Crestonians
I know it is still early in June, but the Celebrate 150 Years With the 10,000 Crestonians is busy making plans for the upcoming celebration. This being our Sesquicentennial Year, many events and activities will be taking place.
The theme for this year’s parade and celebration is, “History Heritage Future.” The sesquicentennial program will be 9 a.m. July 4 in Uptown. The parade will begin at 10:30 a.m. also on the Fourth. If you would like to be in the parade, please call the chamber office at 641-782-7021 or email or text us to sign up, if you wish to be judged. If not, come to the parking lot at Creston Livestock Auction to be included in the parade. In honor of our 150th, those selected first in their category, except antique vehicles, will receive a trophy.
I would also like to pass along that if you know of a child who would like to decorate their bike and be in the bicycle division of the parade, there is a chance for them to win a bicycle and helmet. There is also the annual talent show on the Fourth at McKinley Park; get signed up to entertain your friends and family.
The fireworks show will be held beginning at 9:30 p.m. July 4 at McKinley Park.
If you would like to make a donation to the 10,000 Crestonians, you can drop it off at the chamber office, located at 208 W. Taylor, or mail it to the 10,000 Crestonians, PO Box 471, Creston, IA 50801.
