Creston Community School District hires superintendent

The Creston School Board recently held formal interviews with three finalists. Each finalist met with three mixed interview teams, district administration, the school board and had a tour of the community. Based on the feedback from the interview team and who the board felt was the best fit to lead the district forward, Mr. Deron Stender was offered the position.

Stender was excited to accept the job stating, “My family and I look forward to being a part of the Creston community which has a strong tradition of excellence and community support. I welcome the opportunity to get to know students, staff, parents and community members as we work together and develop solid partnerships”.

Stender currently serves as the superintendent for Clarinda Schools. He has served in this role since 2016. His responsibilities also include oversight of the Clarinda Academy. His prior experience includes serving as a superintendent at Virginia, Frazee-Vergas and Fulda Schools in Minnesota before relocating to Iowa. He was honored with the Distinguished Leadership Award and District Award of Distinction from the Minnesota School Board Association. Prior to getting into school leadership, Deron earned a business degree and taught as a business teacher.

Under Stender’s leadership, his current district has benefited from an increase in open enrollment to the district and multiple improvements to district facilities. He has also expanded technology for teaching and learning and led an extensive strategic action planning process to guide the vision of the district.

Stender earned his Associates of Arts Degree in business from Fergus Falls Community College. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in business from Moorhead State University in 1993. His Master’s Degree and Specialist Degree in education and administration was issued from St. Cloud State University. From Tri-College State University, he earned his licensure in community education. Stender has completed all the coursework toward his doctorate degree education and administration through St. Cloud State University.

Stender is married to his wife Kathy who currently serves as an associate for the Clarinda School District. They have five children, Dylan (27), Sadie (26), Alex (senior), Luke (freshman), and Erik (seventh grader) and two amazing grandchildren. In their free time they enjoy staying active with family activities and exploring new places.

The school board would like to thank everyone involved in the hiring process. The feedback and support received throughout the hiring process is valued and confirms the pride for the district.

The new superintendent will officially begin his duties July 1. Please welcome Deron and his family to the district and community.
