Valley girls take tough loss to end regular season

The Valley girls dropped their regular season finale to Harlan in a shootout, 3-2.

“This was a tough loss for the girls,” said coach Mike Krawczyk.

The two teams played 80 minutes of regulation and two 10-minute overtime sessions, before Harlan out dueled the Valley girls in the shootout.

Raegan Wicks put the Cyclones on top with a goal at the 36:00 mark of the first half. The Valley girls didn’t waiver though and tied the game up at 1-1, on a goal by Madelyn Jaeger, off a cross from Macy Kuhns.

Wicks gave the Cyclones a 2-1 lead with a goal at 24:00 of the second half.

The Valley girls fought back again, scoring with just over eight minutes left to play, when leading scorer Meredith Marks added one more to her total to tie it up at 2-2.

The two teams continued to battle, before the Cyclones got the edge in the shootout, 6-5.

“The girls never gave up,” said Krawczyk. “The coaches are proud of their effort.”

Now, the Valley girls get ready for the postseason on May 28 (last night).

“Our regular season served as an opportunity to sharpen up our skills to play the best of our ability in the postseason,” said Allison Scheel.

Marks takes the mental approach to the post season.

“We need to talk and work as a unit,” she said. “We need to have the mentality that if we lose, we don’t get to move on.”
