Wintermute appointed as mayor of Creston

During its regular meeting Tuesday, Steve Wintermute, at-large representative, became the mayor of Creston by council appointment.

Brenda Lyell-Keate, ward 4 representative, originally made a motion to appoint Rich Madison, 2nd ward representative and mayor pro-tem, to the position of mayor. The motion was voted down by council members Gabe Carroll, Ron Higgins and Terry Freeman. Ward 5 Representative Brian Davis voted in favor of Madison with Keate. Wintermute abstained.

Carroll then made a motion to appoint At-Large Representative Steve Wintermute to the position, which passed with votes from Higgins and Freeman, as well. Davis and Keate voted no; Madison abstained.

The vacancy comes after the resignation of Gary Lybarger, April 30. Madison, mayor pro-tem, has filled the role since Lybarger's departure.

Wintermute will serve as mayor until the end of the city's Nov. 5 election.
