Wolverine boys bow out in sectional tournament golf

The Nodaway Valley boys bowed out in Class 2A sectional action, which was held May 10 at Lake Panorama National. The Wolverines finished eighth in the team standings.

“What a day,” said coach Joel Klobnak. “Today was by far the biggest challenge my players faced yet. It was a brisk day and a pretty tough course. We let the mental game beat us down more than it probably should have, but once again, my players came out with smiles on their faces.”

Team scores- Kuemper Catholic 339, Panorama HS 344, Van Meter 377, Ogden 377, AHSTW-Avoca 413, ACGC 461, West Central Valley 490, Nodaway Valley 634.

Top 10- 1. Corbin Boreli (Kuemper), 78; 2. Kolby Shackelford (PHS), 80; 3. Ryan Klinge (PHS), 81; 4. Ethan Pietig (Kuemper), 82; T5. Grant Caltrider (WCV), 88; Dawson McDermott (Kuemper), 88; T7. Parker Fryer (VM), 90; Dylan Sherlock (VM), 90; Lucas Leiferman (PHS), 90; 10. Jack Tiefenthaler (Kuemper), 91.

NV results:

39. Aryll Shantz, 131

“Aryll was able to pull out some great low scoring holes,” Klobnak said. “He shot a 59 on the front side, which is awesome for him. The back side is what rose his score up.”

41. Michael Britten, 145

“He played his normal up and down,” Klobnak said.“He pulled two bogeys on the par threes, which is always acceptable. Hole 12 was really challenged by his patience. He is strong and looking forward to next year, so I am pleased to hear that.”

43. Mitchel Schafer, 155

“He went out swinging today,” said Klobnak. “The scores do not reflect his attitude and enjoyment of the day. He by far had the greatest day, mood wise. I was more than grateful with how he handled himself today and enjoyed watching him hit a consistent round.”

44. Trevor Flettre, 203

“Today, he realized that golf can mistreat you in many ways,” said Klobnak. “He is usually amongst my top and today he hit the bottom. The nice thing about hitting the bottom is there is only one direction to proceed in. He laughed it off and is looking forward to a summer of golf. If I would have given him the option to DQ after hole 2, I think he would have taken it. The fact that he pushed through and finished smiling shows more character and discipline than I can ask for.”
