Graduation season is upon us

The caps and gowns are getting geared up for their annual appearance over the next few weeks. SWCC had its graduation last Friday night, and now the campus looks pretty empty. The area high schools pretty much get going over the next couple of weeks. Many of them are based around Memorial Day weekend. Many of the graduation parties started last weekend. We had several invites, and you really have to pace yourself with all the food at these events. I would have an appetizer at one party then have a salad or some veggies at the next one. From there, I would have a sandwich or entree at the third party and some kind of small dessert at the fourth one. The fifth one is where I find something to wash it all down with. You have to have a game plan when you can’t eat a lot! Congrats to the graduates.

Blood

I gave blood this last week. It seems like there is more need than ever for the donation. If you can give blood, it is a good thing to do. It seems like there are plenty of uses for blood in today’s world. They had four blood drives on the same day in Mount Ayr, Afton, Orient and Greenfield. They must be getting low; they are even offering Amazon gift cards to try and get you to come in and give a pint.

TV

This week seems to be the ending week for the winter season TV shows. Lots of the “good ones” like “The Big Bang Theory” and “The Black List” are ending their series. Plus, many of the reality shows are also finishing up this week so that the summer schedule will kick in the week of May 20. My favorite summer show is “America’s Got Talent.” Many of the acts from previous years are now performing in Las Vegas and many other places.

Fishing

The weather hasn’t been wonderful, but the fishing seems like it has been pretty good as of late. I went out the other day and caught bass until I ran out of worms. I have reports that the walleye out at Three Mile Lake have been on the bite hard as of late. I had a gentleman that I ran into over in Omaha the other day that said he and two of his family came over and got their limit of walleye three days in a row at Three Mile. The crappies are also biting. So, get your fishing rod out and give it a try; it may be worth it.

Walmart

I see Walmart, as of July 1, is only going to sell tobacco and vape products to people more than 21 years of age. I don’t see a lot of vaping going on here in the rural areas, but when I get to the big cities, it looks like it is at epidemic proportions. I still see way too many rural young people taking a chew. I don’t know if it will slow anyone down. Seems like a lot of people here go down and stock up with tobacco products from Missouri just due to the price being so low right across the border.

Berkshire

I had a chance to attend the Berkshire Hathaway shopping day over in Omaha a couple of weeks ago, which is part of the annual meeting. It was just amazing to watch 17,000 shoppers in the CHI Event Center go after all the bargains. Dairy Queen Blizzards for $1. Wells Lamont gloves for only $5 and Fruit of the Loom products starting at $3. The See’s candy line to check out was like one of lines at the amusement park that went back and forth for about five blocks; the good thing was they had about 20 cashiers. I did get to within about three feet of both Warren Buffet and Charlie Munger, the two heads of Berkshire. I even got a picture of them, although I have had my picture taken with Mr. Buffet in the past. You could buy everything from a $1 Blizzard to a $30,000 diamond at the event. If you ever get the chance to go ... do it!

Thought for the week
