Gene Hutchinson, 71, of Orient died Friday, May 10, 2019, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, May 16, at Steen Funeral Home, 101 SE Fourth St., in Greenfield with burial in Greenfield Cemetery with full military graveside rites conducted by Greenfield American Legion Head-Endres Post No. 265 and V.F.W. Post No. 5357. Phil Price will officiate the service. A luncheon will be held at Plymouth Congregational Church in Orient following the committal services. Open visitation will be from noon to 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 15, at the funeral home with family present from 5 to 7 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Gene Hutchinson memorial fund to be determined. Gene Alden Hutchinson, son of Glen and Doris (Vanderflute) Hutchinson, was born Sept. 27, 1947, in Leon. Gene was raised in Mount Ayr and Diagonal, with the exception of four years in Dade County, Florida. He graduated from Diagonal High School in 1965. Following graduation, he attended Central College in Pella until he enlisted in the United States Army, attaining the rank of first lieutenant.

Following the Army, he attended Des Moines Police Academy and served as a police officer in Des Moines, and later for a few years in Texas. Upon returning to Iowa, he worked in the fur buying business with his father and brother. Later, he returned to complete his education and received his Bachelor of Science in psychology in 1987 from Northwest Missouri State University. Following graduation, he worked with children and families, retiring in 2009.

On Jan. 14, 1998, Gene married Terry McClelland in Orient.

Gene is survived by his wife Terry Hutchinson of Orient; children, Teresa Hutchinson of Des Moines, Melissa Moreno of Austin, Texas, Eddie (Laura Beth) Hutchinson of Fort Campbell, Kentucky, Nicole Richardson (Donald Griggs) of Beulah, Colorado, Ronald (Alyssa) Hutchinson of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Jordan (Matt) Ingram of Winterset, Jillian Jensen of Orient and Jentry Hutchinson of Orient; mother Doris Hutchinson of Creston; 18 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sister Jo Ann (David) Rathe of Creston; and other relatives and friends.

Gene was preceded in death by his father Glenn and brother Eddie Hutchinson.
