Throwback Thursday

Today is May 2, the 122nd day of the year. So, there are 243 days left in 2019. Below are news items from the Creston News Advertiser for this week (April 29 - May 5) in history:

20 years ago

Combined classrooms for some instructional areas were planned at Prescott School for a cost reduction plan that would result in termination of two teachers – Terri Schuler, third grade and Kim Shaw, second grade. An instructional support levy election was planned to raise another $46,000 in annual revenue. The reduction in force and passage of the levy would make the district financially solvent, according to Graham Quinn, superintendent.

Creston High School seniors Cory Bailey, Tanner Kuhl and Ashley Ostroski were chosen from 45 statewide entries as winners of the Governor’s essay contest to assist in choosing four state slogan ideas for Iowa.

CHS paid tribute to people instrumental in helping the school establish the soccer program. Roxanne Carroll handed out plaques to Dave Moffitt, Trolli’s Randy Clark and Van Mark’s Joe Wallace. In all, there were more than 90 other sponsors who contributed to start the program.

Kiwanis Club president, Jack Keuter, presented outstanding senior fine arts awards to Sara Duree, best Thespian award for speech; Jen Fiala, Arion Award for instrumental music; and Cory Gerleman, American Choral Directors Association for vocal music. Chuck and Sue Teutsch from CHS Booster Club presented Mike Peterson of Creston Radio the Friend of the Arts Award.

Creston Super 8 held a grand opening event to celebrate its 40-room addition which would accommodate additional guests, while continuing their 20-year relationship with Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railroad. Super 8 now had 123 rooms available.

50 years ago

Creston and East Union High School seniors attended a mock trial arranged by the Union County Bar Association with Arnold Kenyon as chairman. The case was that of a man charged with operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. Union County Attorney John Platt played the part of the defendant, Judge H.J. Kittleman as judge, Bid Breese as clerk of court, Ed Harvey Jr. as prosecutor, Ray Werner as the defense attorney, Marshall Camp as the arresting highway patrolman and William McLaughlin as a witness.

Appointment of Bill Harris as dean of instruction and Jack Wiechmann as dean of institutional services for Southwestern Community College was announced by the Area 14 Board of Education.

Carl Booth, superintendent of streets and water services at Murray, flushed out the water tower, so it could be painted inside and out. When done, it was filled with water from the new 3,000-feet deep well. Filtering and aerating equipment was to be installed later on as the water had a “little taste.” Booth had worked for the city for 32 years and just 10 years with the water service.

Nominations for the most representative Creston High School seniors were made by the senior class. The boy and girl selected would lead the grand march at prom on May 13. The boys selected were Larry Richards, Tom McCann, Rick Thompson, Ken Ketter and Lincoln Jackson. The girl nominees were Susan Cederburg, Charlette Woods, Gretchen Lines, Mary Daughton and Jan Looney.
