AFTON – East Union girls track and field held serve at its home meet Tuesday, taking second place with 88 team points as the runner-up to Central Decatur.
For the Eagles, it was the distance events and some solid finishes in the sprints that pushed them to a second place finish.
Mattie Riemenschneider and Elizabeth Hardy finished in third and fourth, respectively, in the 800 meter run.
Gabby Valencia took second in the 3,000 meter run and fourth in the 1,500.
The Eagles also put together two second place finishes in the shuttle hurdle and distance medley relay.
In the shuttle hurdle it was Grace Nixon, Molly McNeill, Mallory Raney and Maddy Hayes that finished just off the mark of Central Decatur.
Beth McKnight, Alissa Weinkoetz, Olivia Cheers and Hardy were the foursome that took second in the distance medley for EU.
Diagonal hits the track
The Maroonettes of Diagonal had waited patiently to finally get on the track this season and had some notable performances in Afton.
“I thought our girls performed well for their first meet,” said first-year head coach Zach Robinson. “I believe if we clean up a few things we can be more competitive.”
Erin Sobotka scored eight of the team’s nine team points with a second place finish in the 1,500 meters in 5:40.45.
“I thought Erin Sobotka, ... performed extremely well,” said Robinson. “She also jumped 12 (feet), 10 (inches) in the long jump which was another personal best for her.”
Emily Newton, Kerrigan Mobley, Sofia Cifarelli and Sobotka took sixth in the distance medley as well for the Maroonettes.
Lenox, Murray and Orient-Macksburg set marks
The medley relays had the Tigers taking home gold in both the sprint medley and the distance medley Tuesday.
The sprint medley unit of McKinna Hogan, Niki Sparks, Brooklyn Ecklin and TJ Stoaks crossed the line in 2:04.22.
Hogan anchored the grouping in the distance medley that took first as well, which was led by Niki Sparks, Brooklynn Ecklin and Morgan Parrish before Hogan took over.
Camryn Douglas, Caitlyn Maynes, Jena Ricks and Jynessa Cox helped the Tigers’ 4x800 team finish in second behind CD as Lenox ended the meet with 63 points and a fifth-place overall team finish.
The Lady Mustangs were led by a number of strong performances throughout the evening.
Megan Keller ran a 28.93 in the 200 meter dash, taking second place behind Bedford’s Selena Valenzuela by just 17-hundredths of a second. Keller was also second in the 400 meter dash.
Hailey Chew finished third in the long jump for the Lady Mustangs and the 4x200 pairings of Chew, Emma Decker, Mackenzie Keller and Kelli Romero also grabbed a silver medal.
Cortney Gross, Janesa Tonnberg, Caitlyn Gist and Kaela Eslinger powered the Bulldogs’ sprint medley team to fifth place while Eslinger also snagged a fifth place finish in the shot put and 400 meter dash.
Orient-Macksburg finished the meet with seven team points.
