In a split class event, Creston hosted area schools Mount Ayr, Clarke and East Union in a girls track and field meet Monday afternoon.
Mount Ayr scored the most team points, totalling 220 in class A that led East Union’s 109 points. Atlantic led the points total for class AA with 190, leading Creston’s total of 174 that was good for second place.
With perhaps the best weather in the last few weeks, East Union’s head coach Rich Bryson said that he was going to take advantage of it with Monday being the first of back-to-back meets for his team.
“We kind of scaled back a little bit,” said Bryson. “We just wanted to get some nice work in and put some girls in a little different situation. ...We put some girls in some good situations to kind of polish off their events and we responded pretty well.
“We just wanted to focus on a few events and let them polish and get better going into tomorrow night.”
Despite the scaled back night, EU won its 400 meter hurdles race by two seconds with Molly McNeill posting a 1:15 time. The Eagles’ Gabrielle Valencia also posted an impressive 1,500 time that was seven seconds faster than the second place finisher at 5:47.20.
On the other side, Creston head coach Clay Arnold went out with one goal in mind - win.
“We definitely tried to win,” said Arnold. “It didn’t come out that way, but we were trying to score points and had a couple of unfortunate things happen (Monday) that we weren’t counting on.”
Despite the slight frustration with walking away with second, Arnold has high emotions from the results.
“Other than that, (I am) ecstatic with almost everything I saw on the track tonight,” said Arnold. “We ran some sensational times and had some girls really step up that hadn’t got things going yet. It was very exciting to see them get going.”
For the Panthers, their times in all relays run were the fastest in the AA events and were the fastest overall with the exception of being .05 seconds behind Mount Ayr’s tandem of Hayley Whittington, Ryann Martin, Sam Stewart and Keirston Klommhaus that ran a 1:57.33 in the 4x200.
Martensdale-St. Marys time of 10:33.50 in the 4x800 and Clarinda’s one second edge on Creston’s 55.61 in the 4x100 were the other exceptions.
Arnold said Peyton Rice had an excellent day, posting multiple personal bests that helped the relay teams succeed.
Arnold also said Hannah Dryden and MaKenna Hudson posted excellent times with Dryden breaking her personal record in the opening leg of the 4x400 that helped her group post the fastest time of the meet and Hudson’s efforts anchoring a season-best time that included helping to put away the 4x400 race in the third leg for the Panthers.
“Those three, they really stuck out on the track,” said Arnold.
Mount Ayr’s efforts in multiple events pushed it well into first place, with Adalyn Reynolds sweeping the 100, 200 and 400 meter dashes.
The Raiderettes almost swept the relay races, winning all but the 4x800 with a time of 10:37.72 that fell just under four seconds slower than Martensdale-St.Marys’ time.
“We just kind of loaded our girls up and wanted them to have a good night to run,” said Mount Ayr head coach Deb Larsen. “We told them to compete and look at where they’re at.”
Other notable results for the Raiderettes include MacKenzie Shields high jump of 4 feet, 10 inches and Payten Lambert’s long jump of 16 feet, 1 1/4 inches, both the best scores for their respective events in the meet.
Senior Night
Creston’s Brielle Baker was honored as the lone senior for senior night Monday.
The road over the last four years for Baker has been one of great progression, and that she always had within her said Arnold.
“She’s a great talent, came in as a freshman and started producing right away. In terms of her leadership and her race smarts, she’s at a whole other level. ... (She’s) everything you want in a senior leader.”
Arnold continued talking about how important she is to a young team, sharing her race IQ and her ability to work flawlessly on the track.
“She’s been absolutely outstanding. Her races have been flawless. ...We’ve got a great group of young girls around her to see what she can bring every day. She’s never taken a day off and it’s really paid off,” said Arnold.
