One-act play state winner to be presented

CORNING – The Corning Opera House Cultural Center is hosting the one-act play called “The Zoo Story” 7 p.m. Saturday, April 13, in partnership with the Wilson Performing Arts Center from Red Oak.

Edward Albee’s “The Zoo Story” was entered into the Iowa Community Theater Association 2019 competition and was chosen as a state winner in the one-act category. “The Zoo Story” will represent Iowa at Region V Festival in South Dakota with hopes of advancing to nationals. Region V consists of Iowa, Nebraska, Missouri, Kansas, North Dakota, Minnesota and South Dakota.

“The Zoo Story” is about Peter, an executive with a wife, two daughters, two cats and two parakeets, reading in NYC’s Central Park. He’s secluded and peaceful. His reading is interrupted by Jerry, a lonely and disheartened man, who just wants to have a conversation with another human being. The play is linear, meaning the action unfolds in front of the audience in “real time.” The play is rated PG-13 for some minor adult language and violence.

The cast includes Michael Harvey of Carson, portraying Peter, and John Olson of Shenandoah, portraying Jerry. The show is co-directed by Tracy Rhodes and Olson, and stage managed and special effects by Eric Rhodes.

There will be a freewill donation with all funds going toward their three-day trip, including travel, hotel, food and competition fees. The one-act play lasts about an hour with desserts. A question and answer session will follow the production.

The Corning Opera House is located at 800 Davis Ave. in Corning. The building is handicapped accessible. For more information, call executive director, De Heaton, at 641-418-8047 or check the website www.corningoperahouse.com.
