Wind energy discussion continues

The Union County Board of Supervisors continued a discussion regarding a wind ordinance and permit fees for upcoming wind turbine projects in the county.

“We have talked about it enough now, I mean, I think we’re all in agreement ... that the wind energy project will happen,” said Ron Riley, county supervisor.

The ordinance will go through some additional revisions before a public hearing date is set, is expected to be set and announced later this month.

The board asked Zach Gunsolley, county engineer, what his recommendation on a permit fee per wind turbine should be. Gunsolley suggested a permit fee of $250.

“It doesn’t sound like an exorbitant amount of money but it at least helps cover the cost of administration on my end in addition to my normal duties … plus some field work,” said Gunsolley.

The board of supervisors is also holding regular budget work sessions as they work on a budget for the the upcoming fiscal years. The next budget work sessions take place at 9:30 a.m. on Feb. 6 and 9 a.m. on Feb. 8.

The Union County Board of Supervisors meetings are open to the public and begin with a public open forum at 9 a.m. Mondays at the Union County Courthouse, 300 N. Pine St. The meeting scheduled for Feb. 18 is rescheduled 9 a.m. Feb. 19 in observance of Presidents’ Day.
