Jan was born on Dec. 8, 1940, in Decatur County to Chester and Beryl (Bethards) Cartwright. She attended grade school at Davis City. She went to Leon High School, and graduated in May of 1959. She attended Simpson College, followed by Northeast Missouri State College, and finished her teaching degree at Drake University. She received her Master’s degree at University of Northern Iowa in library science.

Jan was united in marriage to Karlos McClure on Jan. 29, 1961, in Kirksville, Missouri. Two children were born to this union. They moved to New Virginia, where she taught at Interstate 35 Community School District in the St. Charles building for one year. Jan then worked for an insurance company, while finishing her teaching degree at Drake University. After receiving her degree, she taught at Norwalk Community School District. Jan then went back to Interstate 35, where she finished her teaching career. After a year of retirement, Jan moved to Exira with Karlos and worked at the Exira Care Center. While there, she decided to go back to school to receive her care center administration certification. Jan and Karlos then moved to Ft. Atkinson, and she worked at Patty Elwood Center in Cresco in the administrative office. Their final move after retirement was to Cresco.

In her spare time, Jan loved to read, shop, travel, watch college football and basketball, garden and quilt. She was kept busy attending her grandchildren's activities, even traveling long distances to see them play. Jan was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan, often consulting with her assistant coach Camilla Conway.

Jan is survived by her husband of 57 years, Karlos of Cresco; son Tony McClure of Waverly; daughter Shelly (Jeff, favorite son-in-law) McAllister of Cresco; grandchildren, Meghan (Ryan) Harrod of Cresco, Kaitlin (Alex) Holmstrom of Des Moines and Austin (fiancée Haley Martin) McAllister of Iowa City; sister Nancy (Don) Gordon Shearer of Pueblo, Colorado; sister-in-law Sherry (David) Lincoln of Omaha, Nebraska; step-sister-in-law Mary Margaret (Bill) Hill of Lake Ozark, Missouri; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and many family friends; and also her dear friend Camilla Conway.
