Creston volleyball’s Megan Haley signed her letter of intent on Wednesday, confirming her intentions on playing volleyball at Des Moines Area Community College.
Coming into her senior year, Haley’s future as an athlete at the collegiate level was uncertain.
“I really didn’t think I was going to be going on to play college sports just because I wanted to focus on my education and everything,” said Haley. “Halfway through the season I knew I couldn’t give it up yet.”
Haley’s high school career came to a close this past fall, racking up 153 kills and 15 aces in her final campaign.
Although there was uncertainty to if she would play volleyball or not, Haley felt she was drawn to DMACC anyway.
“Early on in my college search I knew I really liked the campus, I took a visit as a junior not even thinking about playing volleyball,” said Haley. “I liked the campus and I liked the community college setting and everything so going to DMACC was my plan from the beginning.”
Panthers volleyball head coach Mallory Peterson said that DMACC got one of the good ones in Haley as both a player and a leader.
“They’re definitely getting a good all-around player,” said Peterson. “Megan is an athlete. She played six rotations on the outside for us and some middle when we needed a block. She’s athletic and an all around solid player with great technique.
“She definitely brings excitement (to DMACC),” added Peterson. “She was always one we wanted to have on the floor. She hypes up the team. ...She’s a good kid to have on the team. Her leadership skills are outstanding.”
Haley had her pickings between DMACC and Southwestern Community College. The close to home community college was nearly the top choice for Haley, pending a less than thrilling visit to DMACC.
“I was on the fence about SWCC a lot,” said Haley. “If the volleyball days at DMACC didn’t go well, that’s where I was headed. I’m glad everything worked out though.”
Haley states she expects to play outside while at DMACC, and plans to study psychology.
