AFTON – East Union hosted Wayne, Mount Ayr, and Nodaway Valley in a wrestling quad on Tuesday. All four teams came out of the gate with high energy, looking to grab important match wins as they get deeper into the season.
Mount Ayr squared up with Wayne in round one of the night. Having a limited roster held back what Mount Ayr could do, with ten wrestlers to Wayne’s 18.
Mount Ayr
The 132 weight matchup found Tay VanDyne of Wayne facing off against Mount Ayr’s Quentin Gregg. With VanDyne on the verge of a pin, Gregg was able to roll out of the pin, avoiding his fall later in the match at 2:38.
Despite losing their first dual 60-24, Trae Ehlen (126) and Brandon Lane (138) were able to get pins in the first dual. They were the only matches won by way of fall.
Round two found the Raiders having trouble, shorthanded again against Nodaway Valley.
Ehlen once again found a pin, this time against Jordan Brewer, in a drawn out battle that lasted 3:37.
The Raiders had another pin come from Quentin Gregg over Jevin Christensen. It’d be their last points of the night.
Nodaway Valley was able to hold the Raiders to only 18 points, winning four matches against Raider wrestlers by way of pin. The Wolverines won 57-18.
Round three found the Raiders paired up with a shorthanded East Union squad, a dual where all matches were important in the outcome.
The Raiders looked their best against the Eagles, with Ehlen collecting his third win of the night, this time a 5-3 decision against Jarryn Stephens.
Mount Ayr had pins from Lane and Keaton White, as well a decision win from Bryce Shaha.
The second and third time out for the Raiders were considerably better, according to coach John Ford.
“As a team I felt like we wrestled okay,” said Ford. “Our first match was off. Our second and third dual we wrestled a lot better. We had some young kids get their first win which is always a plus for your program so that I was happy with.”
Adjustments made after round one revolved around one word, intensity.
“We were not going hard the first dual,” said Ford. “Some of the kids had some easier matches that we should have dominated and we barely won. We had to pick up intensity in the second and third dual.”
Heading into the Pride of Iowa Championships, the intensity needs to be held in order to keep being successful said Ford. Mount Ayr will also look to bring back a key wrestler after the holiday break.
“We need to be able to be intense all the time,” said Ford. “We have POI this weekend, that’s a big tournament for us. Hopefully after the first of the year we’ll have Josh Cox eligible and have our heavyweight back. That’s what we’ve been working on.”
East Union
East Union fell to Nodaway Valley in the first round, 36-24.
A back and forth match to start the evening had Nodaway Valley’s Colby Harris (138) grab a pivotal pin on Onxe Ibbotson to extend their lead to 24-9.
From there, the Eagles were fighting an uphill battle.
Pins from Brant Looney (170) over Trevor Flettre and Cole Wimber (113) over Ben Breheny helped build their point total, but 182 pound forfeit were points lost.
Round two found the Eagles facing a Wayne team that was fresh off its win over Mount Ayr.
Looking to make noise, the Eagles had a long and grueling battle at 126 pounds between Jarryn Stephens and Trent Terrell that went the distance. Stephens came out on top by decision 10-6.
Pins from Sherman Hayes and Looney, and a forfeit in favor of Wimber gave the Eagles much needed team points, but it was not enough to push them into the lead as they fell to 0-2 on the night.
Round three had a shorthanded Eagles team paired up with a shorthanded Mount Ayr team.
The Eagles struggled with doing any damage from their lightweights, losing their 120 through 138 matches. Mt. Ayr was unable to have a suitor for Hayes, giving the Eagles their first points by default.
The final dual of the night had the Eagles win only by forfeit, dropping the the meeting against Mount Ayr 48-18.
Knowing Thursday would be an uphill climb, coach Adam Tallmon has hopes to get back to winning ways soon.
“We’re down on kids,” said Tallmon. “We only wrestled seven tonight, so it’s hard to win a dual with seven kids. We’ve got some injuries we’re trying to get over and hopefully after Christmas we get everybody back so we can compete better, but with low numbers it’s hard. Overall I think we wrestled pretty well tonight but there were a couple of tough matches.”
Nodaway Valley
Nodaway Valley kicked off the night eager to face East Union in round one.
The Wolverines were able to get forfeit wins from Elliot Cooney, Jaxon Christensen and Caelen DeVault before Colby Harris pinned Ibbotson.
A battle between Hayes and Austin Wilson at 145 pounds ended in a 2-1 decision, a near snap of Hayes’ undefeated streak.
The Wolverines were able to answer right back with an overpowering pin from Tyler Breheny on Connor Johnson at 152.
Forfeit wins for both sides and a East Union pin kept the differential constant, as the Wolverines grabbed a win from East Union, 42-24.
In round two, the Wolverines beat up on the Raiders by a score of 57-18.
The longest fight came by way of tech. fall. Briar Knapp of Mount Ayr was unable to hold off Breheny, falling by a 17-1 score in 5:02.
Austin Wilson pinned Keaton White in 3:36, pulling the score to 18-16.
To contrast the long matches, a Wolverines pin from Trevor Flettre on Andi Gonzalez came in a dominating 17 seconds.
Flettre’s pin was the quickest pin of the night and added an exclamation point on the overpowering second round for the Wolverines.
The third round paired the Wolverines against Wayne, as both teams entered round three 2-0.
The Wolverines grabbed two forfeits in favor of Elliot Cooney (106) and Ben Breheny (113) before losing a tough 120 match.
With the 120 dual of Jakson Cobb and Christensen heading down to the final seconds of the second round it seemed Christensen had the advantage with several near pins on Cobb. Cobb was able to reverse Christensen and pinned him.
Wayne was able to rally around the match and win eight of ten through the rest of the weight classes, losing a match by major decision (11-2) to Caelen DeVault (138) and by pin to Trevor Flettre (170).
The Flettre match received high praise from coach Jesse McCann.
“I was quite pleased with how Trevor (Flettre) bounced back after his first loss,” said McCann. “He showed he was determined to right the ship and get back to his winning ways.”
A long night for the Wolverines ended in a 2-1 run, losing to Wayne 51-28.
“We’ve been battling some sickness going around so I tried keeping the intensity high and prepared them through working on smart wrestling and knowing the situation,” said McCann. “This was done through tweaking on some basic fundamentals and working on our craft, followed with intense condition and constant motion drills.”
With a bright future on the horizon for the program, McCann is excited for the next match.
“We have competitive athletes and a lot more than last year,” McCann said. “Some of them will have tough matches that I will be looking forward to and hope they can over take the challenge head on.”
