Jerry Reed, 89, of Greenfield died Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2018, at VA Central Iowa Health Care System in Des Moines.

Funeral services were 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, at Greenfield Gospel Chapel. Burial was in Greenfield Cemetery with full military graveside rites conducted by Greenfield American Legion Head-Endres Post No. 265 and V.F.W. Post No. 5357. A luncheon was held at the church following burial. Open visitation was from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 28, with family present from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Steen Funeral Home, 101 SE Fourth St., in Greenfield. Gerald “Jerry” Walter Reed, son of Stanley and Violet (Gehret) Reed, was born Oct. 16, 1928, in Reading, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Wilson High School and attended Emmaus Bible School in Toronto, Canada.

On March 24, 1951, he married Jean Byers, and later that year, he entered the Marine Corp. In 1960, they moved to Greenfield to assist the Greenfield Gospel Chapel. He owned and operated the Amoco station for many years.

Jerry is survived by his wife Jean Reed; daughters, Nina (Randy) Horn and Rose (David) Hammond; brothers, Ted Reed and George (Johanna) Reed; sister Joan (Richard) Hilt; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents; daughter Leticia; brothers, Russell and Richard Reed; sister MaryLou Gehris; granddaughter Naphtali Hammond and great-grandson Elliot Hughes.
