Eleven make All-POI softball teams

Eleven area players earned all-Pride of Iowa conference honors following the completion of the 2018 softball season.

Mount Ayr received five award winners as Caroline McAlexander, Abigail Barnes, Alyssa Johnson and Sam Stewart all picked up first team honors.

McAlexander spent a majority of her innings as the Raiderette starting pitcher in which she threw 125 and 2/3 innings where she posted a 2.12 earned run average and a .144 opponent batting average. The junior hurler struck out 145 batters during her work in the circle this season.

At the dish, McAlexander hit a .453 average with 13 doubles, six home runs and 37 RBIs (the fourth most in the Pride of Iowa). In addition, she only struck out nine times in 86 at-bats. She slugged an .814 mark that ranked as the third best in the conference.

Her catcher, Barnes, also received first team recognition for her bat. Barnes hit for a .326 average at the dish and drove in 24 runs with two dingers. Along with calling pitches behind the dish, the sophomore catcher had the best fielding percentage on the team (.990), committing just two errors while catching five runners stealing in 19 attempts.

Johnson hit .434 at the plate with 18 RBIs as the Raiderette leadoff hitter. The outgoing senior was perfect on the base paths, swiping 21 bases without failure. She recorded seven doubles and four triples.

Stewart was the fourth Mount Ayr player to make the first team, hitting for a .407 batting average with seven doubles, two triples and drove in 20 RBIs. In 81 at-bats Stewart struck out just four times.

Tigers grab two first-team slots

The Lenox Tigers had two names on the first-team list also as freshman TJ Stoaks and senior Jessica Anderson earned their way onto the parchment.

Stoaks set the Lenox single-season strikeout record with 279 K’s over the course of the season in which she went 24-8 in the circle with a 1.50 ERA. Opponents batted with just a .146 average against the Tiger freshman and she walked just 69 batters. Stoaks finishes the season with a remarkable 0.96 WHIP (Walks and hits per innings pitched).

At the plate Stoaks put together a .378 batting average with six doubles and 21 RBIs. She crossed the plate 23 times and stole 12 bases.

Anderson completed her final season with the Tigers as the team’s best hitter, recording a .393 average at the dish. With 10 doubles and three triples, Anderson drove in 23 RBIs while slugging at a .536 clip.
