Throwback Thursday

Today is June 14, the 165th day of the year. So, there are 200 days left in 2018. Below are news items from the Creston News Advertiser for this week (June 11-17) in history:

Union County Board of Supervisors announced the appointment of Kelly Busch, 31, as Union County Treasurer for the interim until the general election in November. Busch was selected out of 14 qualified applicants of which four were interviewed. Busch, Creston High School graduate and daughter of Gary and Mary Jo Borcherding of Creston, is married to Scott Busch and had daughters, Paige and Jenna.

First Federal Savings Bank of Creston, 301 N. Pine St., had a new look with a remodeled roof, a new logo and the roll-out of a new checking product. First organized in 1930 by Fred W. Ide as Creston Building and Loan Association, it was approved as Federal Savings and Loan in 1934 and located at 209 N. Maple St. until it moved to North Pine Street in 1972. After President Gary Davis retired in 2007, Ty Rogers became his successor.

20 years ago

The front porch of the Elks Lodge filled with appreciative observers during the Flag Day ceremony in Creston. A special reading was given by sixth-grader Scott Levine on “What the Flag Means to Me.” He was the winner of an essay contest conducted by the Elks.

Horace Daggett, former state representative from Creston, died June 16, 1998, at the age of 67 after a lengthy illness with cancer. Many commented on how great of a mentor he was as he encouraged them to pursue a state office. Rep. Leonard Boswell, Rep. Cecil Dolecheck and Sen. Jeff Angelo mentioned he was a man to look up to and someone to try to emulate what he stood for. Gov. Terry Branstad and Daggett had entered Iowa politics in 1972 as freshman legislators and Branstad described him as hard-working and honest who was able to get work done without being “flashy.”

Union County Board of Supervisors authorized Union County Engineer Curt Greenfield to complete a rock hauling contract with Schildberg Construction to catch up on rock replacement on the muddy rural roads after a extremely wet spring.

Street signs on nearly 600 intersections in rural Union County were finally being installed for the E911 system. The system had officially been online since Oct. 1, 1997, and Sheriff John Coulter said having the signs installed would aid emergency response agencies.

Jay Watson and Lynn Rinehart of Mount Ayr and 10 others decided to try and get into the Guinness Book by being the first people ever to play a round of golf in five states on one day. The group was to cover 185 miles and 45 holes of golf in Arkansas, Tennessee, Kentucky, Illinois and Missouri.

Registration for the Red Cross summer swimming instruction program at the Creston Municipal Pool had reached an even 1,000 when the registration period closed. Registration was also being held at Afton, Arispe, Lorimor and Thayer, although the number of children that would be bused to Creston from those communities had not been reported.

Henry Strand, wearing protective clothing, removed a swarm of bees from a parking meter post at the southwest corner of the Pine Street parking lot. The bees had formed a solid mass on the post and police closed the alley, until Strand could gently brush the bees from the pole and pour them into a hive where they remained after the queen was put in the hive.
