Kurt Kiburz, 50, of Afton died Sunday, May 6, 2018, at his home near Afton.

Celebration of life services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 9, at Powers Funeral Home, 601 New York Ave., in Creston. The Rev. William Richardson will officiate. Burial will be in Tingley Cemetery, north of Tingley. Military graveside rites will be given by Theodore J. Martens Post No. 1797 Creston, V.F.W. Open visitation will be from 2 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 8, with family present from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials are to Cancer Support Ministry, Hospice of Central Iowa, Iowa City V.A. Cancer Department or Afton Assembly of God Church. Kurtis Ivan Kiburz, son of Janet Louise (Richards) Kiburz and Kenneth Isaac Kiburz, was born April 5, 1968, in Creston. He graduated from East Union High School in 1986.

On May 24, 1986, Kurt married Amy Lisa Franklin at the Assembly of God Church in Afton. Kurt enlisted in the United States Air Force beginning in December 1986. While in the Air Force, he was stationed in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Bentwaters, England, and Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tuscon, Arizona. Kurt was deployed many times and places during his time in the service, including Saudi Arabia during the Persian Gulf War. In 1993, he transferred out of the Air Force into Air National Guard in Des Moines, serving in the guard from 1993 to 2007.

In 1993, Kurt began farming with his father, raising corn, beans, hay and some oats. He bred and raised registered Black Angus cattle.

Kurt was a member of Afton Assembly of God Church, and served as a trustee to Sandcreek Township.

Kurt is survived by his wife Amy (Franklin) Kiburz of Afton; daughter Elizabeth Kiburz of St. Petersburg, Florida; son Keith (Allie) Kiburz of Winterset; mother Janet (John) Mayer of Winterset; mother-in-law Thelma Franklin of Afton; brothers, Kim Kiburz of Urbandale, Kent (Melissa) Kiburz of Winterset and Kevin (Anna Catherine) Kiburz of Tingley; sisters, Sheryl (Dave) DeLoach of Fenton, Missouri, Kathy (Johnny) Grettenberg of Waukee, Anita Williams of Grand Rapids, Minnesota, and Kolleen Kiburz of Dallas, Texas.

Kurt was preceded in death by his father Ken in 2002, stepmother Gloria Kiburz, father-in-law John Franklin, sister-in-law Marsha Franklin and brother-in-law David Franklin.
