Creston’s boys track and field athletes are slowly elevating their performance levels

OSCEOLA — Creston’s boys track and field team set a new school sprint medley record and had the highest team point total (48) in the last two seasons Tuesday at Osceola.

The Panthers still finished fifth out of five teams, but proved more competitive in a number of events than meets past.

The sprint medley unit of Dale Boyer, Keagan Trembly, Michael Scherer and Cael Kralik finished in a time of 1:44.29, besting last year’s mark by nearly seven seconds.

Scherer had a season’s best leap of 5 feet, 8 inches in the high jump for third. Kralik also took fifth in the 400 meter dash (57.51 seconds). Boyer finished fourth in the shot put with his throw of 38 feet.

Hank Looney, Jackson Kinsella and Jonathan Kendrick also added season’s best performances.

“We tried some people in some different individual and relay events for the fist time this season in a varsity meet,” Creston coach Pat Schlapia said. “ ... more of the South Central Iowa schools, instead of the Western Iowa teams. Good to see some different competition. Also, good to get outside with decent weather. You can tell that we’re still rounding into condition. We have to keep competing no matter the event, or place.”
